Argonne High-Flux Research Reactor: AHFR Conceptual Design Study

Description: Report issued by the Argonne National Laboratory discussing high-flux research reactor design studies. As stated in the summary, "this report presents a reactor design to meet the needs of the basic research program at Argonne National Laboratory. The program requires some irradiation in thermal flux...and some beam experiments..." (p. 5). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Gustav Holst as a Choral Composer: His Life, Factors Influencing His Compositions, His Place in English Music, and a Consideration of the Principal Stylistic Elements of His Choral Music

Description: "An amiable personality, not himself an unusually passionate man, HoIst has excited more violent passions than any other contemporary English composer. How difficult he is to assess as a creative artist is perhaps indicated by the extraordinary fluctuations in his reputation." For a number of years he was completely unknown and ignored, living a quiet and unhurried life as an obscure teacher. Then with a momentary flash, after outstanding works such as "The Planets," and the "Ode to Death," he was caught up in a wave of public approval that made him, for a time, the recipient of national and even international honors. He was awarded the gold medal by the Royal Philharmonic Society, was made a Fellow of the Royal Col.ege of Music, and was offered honorary degrees by American universities.

FIRST SODIUM REACTOR EXPERIMENT (SRE) TEST OF HALLAM NUCLEAR POWER FACILITY (HNPF) CONTROL MATERIALS

Description: An experiment was conducted in the SRE to measure temperatures and neutron flux levels in and near a boron-containing simulated control rod. The data are being used to check analytical methods developed for prediction of control rod heat generation rates and maximum temperatures in this type of control rod in the Hallam Nuclear Power Facility. The maximum observed temperatures with a reactor power level of 20 Mw were 1363 deg F for a boron-- nickel alloy ring having a 0.105-in. radial clearance with the thimble and 1100 deg F for a boron -nickel alloy ring having a 0.020-in. radial clearance. The maximum temperature difference between the coolant and the control rod was 473 deg F. It is concluded that the expected greater heat generation rates in the Hallam reactor would prohibit the use of boron-containing absorber materials in a combined a him-safety rod. (auth)

Preliminary Studies of Scavenging Systems Related to Radioactive Fallout. Letter Report No. 7 Covering Period April 1 to May 31, 1959

Description: Progress is reported on the development of a cyclone which will remove particles larger than 8 microns. A method is proposed for a more efficient separation of particles by increasing the number of size separation filters in the sampling train. Preliminary tests with submicron polystyrene particles are being conducted. Numerous methods have been tried for counting the particles in a water droplet of the polystyrene aerosol. The criteria for a satisfactory method of counting particles are discussed. A proposed method to accomplish this is to use carbon-14 labeled polystyrene hydrosols. (For preceding period see ARF-3127-6.) (B.O.G.)

GAMMA RAYS FROM THE INTERACTION OF 14-Mev NEUTRONS WITH BERYLLIUM

Description: The cross section for the Be/sup 9/(n,t')Li/sup 7*/ -- Li/sup 7/ + gamma (0.477 Mev) reaction was measured in the vicixity of 14 Mev by detecting the gamma rays at scattering angles from 30 to 150 degrees. A time-of-flight technique was used to distinguish the gamma rays from the high neutron background. The cross section drops from 20 mb at 13.6 Mev to 10 mb at 14.1 Mev and then rises to 30 mb at 14.7 Mev. (auth)

Solutions of Systems of Differential Equations

Description: FOLDER is a routine whose purpose is to solve a system of linear differential equations on the IBM 650 computer which is equipped with index accumulators and floating-point hardware. A system of K n/sup th/-order differential equations which is represented by a system of K x n first-order differential equations and coded in a prescribed manner is solved numerically by the methods of Milne and/or Runge-Kutta. Flexible operating modes are made possible by the user's designtion of parameters. Output data and format are under complete control of the user. (auth)

Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Governors

Description: One facet of the problem of state rights within the Confederacy is revealed through a study of the relations between President Davis and the war governors. As a means of investigating those relationships this study considers their attempts to solve several major problems. This work seeks to discover the degree of co-operation which existed between the President and governors and to establish what effect this co-operation or lack of it had on the failure of the states to support many important central government policies. It also seeks to determine what influence those relationships had on the outcome of the war.

Psychological Sex and Sociometric Nomination

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of the psychological sex role of a person making sociometric nominations to the psychological sex role of such persons nominated. It was hypothesized that similar psychological and biological sexed persons would choose each other as friends and that similar psychological but opposite biological sexed persons would reject each other as non-friends.

Signs of Paranoid Schizophrenic Behavior on the Bender-Gestalt Test

Description: The problem of this study was to isolate a constellation of "signs" or items of behavior of individuals on the Bender-Gestalt test and to determine if these signs will discriminate significantly between one patient category, paranoid schizophrenia, and three other major diagnostic categories.

The Use of Art Objects in the Fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne

Description: This study is not concerned with the evaluation of Hawthorne's artistic criticism but with the uses he made art objects in his writing. Such a study should give suggestions for interpretation of his works, as well as information concerning literary devices and technique in style. It should consider the contribution of the art objects to the literary artistry of the works in which they appear. Such a study has not previously been made.

The Rorsach as an Indicator of Intelligence in Seventh-Grade Children

Description: This study was undertaken in the belief that a greater relationship would be revealed between the Rorschach and intelligence test scores if the factors in the Rorschach which have been found in the past to be related to intelligence could be compared as a whole with scores obtained on mental tests. The purpose of this study was to determine whether it could be demonstrated that a higher degree of relationship does exist between several of the Rorschach factors, considered as a whole, and intelligence as revealed by the California Test of Mental Maturity.
