1991 Annual Report to the National Science Foundation

Description: The Geometry Center research program has a number of different aspects, most of which involve longer term commitments, such as, development of research software, teams of individuals visually exploring mathematical structures and sponsoring of workshops. The Center is built on the research programs of its faculty. These programs have flourished and interacted under the Center umbrella. There are many interconnections and commonalities between the fields represented. Here, a summary of the resea… more

1991 Pacific Northwest Loads and Resources Study.

Description: This study establishes the Bonneville Power Administration's (BPA) planning basis for supplying electricity to BPA customers. The Loads and Resources Study is presented in three documents: (1) this summary of federal system and Pacific Northwest region loads and resources; (2) a technical appendix detailing forecasted Pacific Northwest economic trends and loads, and (3) a technical appendix detailing the loads and resources for each major Pacific Northwest generating utility. This analysis upda… more

Advanced atomization concept for CWF burning in small combustors, Phase 2

Description: The program describes a concept referred to as opposed-jet atomization, which is particularly applicable to coal-water fuel (CWF). In the present atomizer design, two opposed jets of CWF are directed at each other and externally encounter a perpendicular blast of air at the collision point to create a spray of much finer droplets. The present Phase 2 program involved further evaluation of the opposed-jet atomizer performance and related tasks.

Alternate approaches to verifying the structural adequacy of the Defense High Level Waste Shipping Cask

Description: In the early 1980s, the US Department of Energy/Defense Programs (DOE/DP) initiated a project to develop a safe and efficient transportation system for defense high level waste (DHLW). A long-standing objective of the DHLW transportation project is to develop a truck cask that represents the leading edge of cask technology as well as one that fully complies with all applicable DOE, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. General Atomics (GA) desi… more

Analysis of diagnostic testing of Gladys McCall Well No. 1

Description: Gladys McCall Well No. 1 was flow tested from 1983 to 1987, underwent long-term pressure buildup testing from October 1987 to October 1991, and has recently been re-entered for final diagnostic testing. The combination of a very large, poorly defined reservoir with data from only a single well has required that the testing be carried out over an unusually long time period for an understanding of the pressure maintenance mechanisms to be developed. Ongoing diagnostic testing of the well has been… more

Annual monitoring and surveillance report for Piqua Nuclear Power Facility, Piqua, Ohio

Description: This report discusses the decommissioned Piqua Nuclear Power Facility which is located in Piqua, Ohio near the Greater Miami River. The Facility was built by the US Atomic Energy Commission (now U. S. Department of Energy) and was operated from 1963 to 1966. The reactor was retired prior to 1970 and the facility was leased to the city of Piqua for use as offices and equipment storage. In December 1991, a radiological survey was done of the facility to document its radiological condition. The da… more

Anomalous ion thermal diffusion from. eta. sub i -modes

Description: Models of ion temperature gradient-driven turbulence are reexamined in terms of the structure of the turbulent spectrum for radially localized modes to explain the significant difference between the radial profiles of ion heat conductivity inferred from local turbulence models and those observed in experiments. The strong radial inhomogeneity of the effective density of the turbulence spectrum in k is shown to produce a significant increase of the fluctuation level and ion thermal diffusion tow… more

Aquifer test at Comore Loma No. 4, Idaho Falls, Idaho

Description: An aquifer test was conducted at Comore Loma Well {number sign}4 to determine the aquifer hydraulic characteristics at this location on July 11 and 12, 1991. Water was withdrawn from Comore Loma Well {number sign}4 at approximately 850 gallons per minute for 8 hours while monitoring the water level in the plumping well and an observation well 930 ft away. The pumped well showed over 12 ft of drawdown with no discernable drawdown in the observation well. The drawdown in the pumped well was nearl… more
