Habitat Evaluation Procedures (HEP) Report : Oleson Tracts of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, 2001-2002 Technical Report.

Description: Located in the northern Willamette River basin, Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) was established in 1992 with an approved acquisition boundary to accommodate willing sellers with potentially restorable holdings within the Tualatin River floodplain. The Refuge's floodplain of seasonal and emergent wetlands, Oregon ash riparian hardwood, riparian shrub, coniferous forest, and Garry oak communities are representative of remnant plant communities historically common in the Willamett… more

Genome-wide experimental determination of barriers to horizontal gene transfer

Description: Horizontal gene transfer, in which genetic material is transferred from the genome of one organism to another, has been investigated in microbial species mainly through computational sequence analyses. To address the lack of experimental data, we studied the attempted movement of 246,045 genes from 79 prokaryotic genomes into E. coli and identified genes that consistently fail to transfer. We studied the mechanisms underlying transfer inhibition by placing coding regions from different species … more

Habitat associations of saproxylic beetles in the southeastern United States: A comparison of forest types, tree species and wood postures.

Description: Saproxylic beetles are highly sensitive to forest management practices that reduce the abundance and variety of dead wood. However, this diverse fauna continues to receive little attention in the southeastern United States even though this region supports some of the most diverse, productive and intensively managed forests in North America. In this replicated three-way factorial experiment, we investigated the habitat associations of saproxylic beetles on the coastal plain of South Carolina. Th… more

Spatial and temporal patterns of root distribution in developing stands of four woody crop species grown with drip irrigation and fertilization.

Description: Abstract In forest trees, roots mediate such significant carbon fluxes as primary production and soil C02 efflux. Despite the central role of roots in these critical processes, information on root distribution during stand establishment is limited, yet must be described to accurately predict how various forest types, which are growing with a range of resource limitations, might respond to environmental change. This study reports root length density and biomass development in young stands of eas… more

Managing Commercial Tree Species for Timber Production and Carbon Sequestration: Management Guidelines and Financial Returns

Description: A carbon credit market is developing in the United States. Information is needed by buyers and sellers of carbon credits so that the market functions equitably and efficiently. Analyses have been conducted to determine the optimal forest management regime to employ for each of the major commercial tree species so that profitability of timber production only or the combination of timber production and carbon sequestration is maximized. Because the potential of a forest ecosystem to sequester car… more

The implications of concurrent increases in temperature and CO[sup 2] concentration for terrestrial C[sup 3] photosynthesis

Description: This study utilizes a mechanistic model of lea photosynthesis to examine the potential quantitative significance of the interaction of rising atmospheric. Carbon dioxide concentration (C[sub a]) and temperature on leaf photosynthesis. Predictions are compared to experimental measurements in which plants have been grown either in elevated C[sub a] in the field for extended periods or from seed in controlled environments, to examine the interaction of low temperature with elevated C[sub a]. Toxicity test of the F-Area seep soils by laboratory lettuce seed germination and seedling growth

Description: This study is a follow-up of a similar study done by Loehle (1990). The objectives of the original study were to: (1) measure the toxicity of groundwater contaminated by the F-Area seepage basins where this water surfaces in a seepline along Fourmile Branch and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of rainwater for washing contaminants from the soil. Results of seed germination tests show no significant difference between water extracted from one extraction of F-Area seepline soil, soil from a cont… more

Green Roofs: Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) Federal Technology Alert

Description: In a ''green roof,'' a layer of vegetation (e.g., a roof garden) covers the surface of a roof to provide shade, cooler indoor and outdoor temperatures, and effective storm-water management to reduce runoff. The main components are waterproofing, soil, and plants. There are two basic kinds: intensive and extensive. An intensive green roof often features large shrubs and trees, and it can be expensive to install and maintain. An extensive green roof features shallow soil and low-growing, horizont… more

Use of fish community data to evaluate restoration success of a riparian stream.

Description: Abstract From 1985 to 1988, stream and riparian habitats in Pen branch and Four Mile branch began recovering from deforestation caused by the previous release of hot water from nuclear reactors. The Pen branch corridor was replanted with wetland trees in 1995 to expedite recovery and restore the Pen branch ecosystem. Pen branch, Four Mile branch, and two relatively undisturbed streams were electrofished in 1995:1996 to determine how fish assemblages differed between the previously disturbed and… more

Developments in ecology in systems analysis and land-use planning. Environmental Sciences Division Publication No. 1074

Description: The need for ecological analysis in land-use planning has become increasingly evident as mans' land-intensive activities continually lead to conflict or to difficult decisions. Systems-analysis techniques useful in land-use planning are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on ecological and environmental aspects of the problem. Three particular approaches to different parts of the overall land-use problem are given as examples of the application of systems analysis in this area. Simula… more

Sandy River Delta Habitat Restoration : Annual Report, January 2008 - March 2009.

Description: During the period 2008-2009, there were 2 contracts with BPA. One (38539) was dealing with the restoration work for 2007 and the other (26198) was an extension on the 2006 contract including the NEPA for Dam removal on the old channel of the Sandy River. For contract 38539, the Sandy River Delta Habitat Restoration project continued its focus on riparian hardwood reforestation with less emphasis on wetlands restoration. Emphasis was placed on Sundial Island again due to the potential removal of… more

Using Boosted Decision Trees to Separate Signal and Background in B to XsGamma Decays

Description: The measurement of the branching fraction of the flavor changing neutral current B {yields} X{sub s}{gamma} transition can be used to expose physics outside the Standard Model. In order to make a precise measurement of this inclusive branching fraction, it is necessary to be able to effectively separate signal and background in the data. In order to achieve better separation, an algorithm based on Boosted Decision Trees (BDTs) is implemented. Using Monte Carlo simulated events, ''forests'' of t… more
