Solar dynamic heat pipe development and endurance test. Monthly technical progress report number 4, August 28--September 29, 1987

Description: The Space Station requires a high level of reliable electric power. The baseline approach is to utilize a hybrid system in which power is provided by photovoltaic arrays and by solar dynamic power conversion modules. The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) engine is one approach to solar dynamic conversion. The ORC provides the attributes of high efficiency at low temperature and compact simple designs utilizing conventional techniques and materials. The heat receiver is one area which must be addresseā€¦ more

Characterization of organics in the feed streams for the H/F Effluent Treatment Facility

Description: Analysis of weekly samples from the F- and H-area treblers indicates that tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) is the major organic species in the feed to the F/H Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF). Concentrations up to 100 mg/L were observed, with an average of 50 mg/L from F-area and 3 mg/L from H-area. Normal paraffinic hydrocarbons (NPH) are present in lesser amounts, ranging up to 4 mg/L. These two species, both foulants of the reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, account for almost all of the dissolved oā€¦ more

LANL compact laser pumping simulation. Final task report

Description: Rockwell has been tasked with the objective of both qualitatively and quantitatively defining the performance of LANL Compact Laser coupling systems. The performance criteria of the system will be based upon the magnitude and uniformity of the energy distribution in the laser pumping rod. Once this is understood, it will then be possible to improve the device performance via changes in the system`s component parameters. For this study, the authors have chosen to use the Los Alamos Radiometry Coā€¦ more

Finite element stress analysis of D0 test beam transporter mainframe assembly

Description: The D0 test beam transporter mainframe assembly is a structural frame lying in a horizontal plane and designed to support and orient the D0 test liquid argon calorimeter properly in the test beam. Azimuthal adjustment is provided by a turntable with a mean radius of 64 inches, supported on a pressurized oil bearing. Angular positioning is achieved by an hydraulic actuator attached to the turntable which places force against an arm on the calorimeter vessel, causing it to rotate. Vertical positiā€¦ more

Multidimensional modeling of convective heat transfer with application to IC (internal combustion) engines

Description: The objective of this project is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the convective heat transfer process in complex, unsteady turbulent reacting flows, typical of those which occur in internal combustion engines. The specific area of research will be the representation of heat transfer in detailed multi-dimensional Navier-Stokes models, and modeling of turbulent transport mechanisms. The detailed tasks will include a review of relevant prior work. Based on this review, and originaā€¦ more

CC Cryostat Cooldown Test Warmup

Description: This report discusses the warming up of the stainless steel inner vessel of the CC Cryostat back to room temperature after it has been cooled down by liquid nitrogen. It considers the sufficiency of a standard magnet warm-up 12KW heater in delivering enough heat to warm the Crypstat in a couple of days. The concept of sufficiency will be answered by the following questions, and by an experimental test that was made of the heater in question.

Central Calorimeter Transporter Cart Design

Description: The purpose of the cryostat transporter cart is to provide a means of rolling the CC cryostat in and out of a building, and to proyide a means of support for the cryostat while it is being worked on. The constraints on the cart are: (1) There should be a minimum amount of clearance between the cryostat and the ground, in order to be able to roll the cart and cryostat into a building; (2) The cart must be able to support the weight of the cryostat as well as the weight of approximately 4,000 galā€¦ more

Analytical and numerical analysis of finite amplitude Rayleigh-Taylor instability

Description: We summarize the results obtained in the last year. These include a simple model of bubble competition in Rayleigh-Taylor unstable flows which gives results which are in good agreement with experiment. In addition the model has been compared with two dimensional numerical simulations of inviscid Rayleigh-Taylor instability using the cloud-in-cell method. These simulations can now be run into the late time regime and can track the competition of as many as ten bubbles. The improvement in performā€¦ more

Thermal damage study of beryllium windows used as vacuum barriers in synchrotron radiation beamlines

Description: An experimental study to investigate thermal-induced damage to SSRL-designed beryllium foil windows was performed at LLNL's Laser Welding Research Facility. The primary goal of this study was to determine the threshold at which thermal-stress-induced damage occurs in these commonly used vacuum barriers. An Nd:Yag pulsed laser with cylindrical optics and a carefully designed test cell provided a test environment that closely resembles the actual beamline conditions at SSRL.
