Organic Rankine-Cycle Power Systems Working Fluids Study: Topical report No. 3, 2-methylpyridine/water

Description: A mixture of 35 mole percent (mol %) 2-methylpyridine and 65 mol % water was tested at 575, 625, and 675/degree/F in a dynamic loop. Samples of the degraded fluid were chemically analyzed to determine the identities of major degradation products and the quantity of degradation. Computed degradation rates were found to be higher than those for Fluorinol 85 or toluene. For this reason (and other reasons, related to fluid handling), other fluids are recommended as the first choice for service in o… more

LANL compact laser pumping simulation. Final task report

Description: Rockwell has been tasked with the objective of both qualitatively and quantitatively defining the performance of LANL Compact Laser coupling systems. The performance criteria of the system will be based upon the magnitude and uniformity of the energy distribution in the laser pumping rod. Once this is understood, it will then be possible to improve the device performance via changes in the system`s component parameters. For this study, the authors have chosen to use the Los Alamos Radiometry Co… more

Absorption of carbon dioxide in waste tanks

Description: Air flow rates and carbon dioxide concentrations of air entering and exiting eight H-Area waste tanks were monitored for a period of one year. The average instanteous concentration of carbon dioxide in air is within the range reported offsite, and therefore is not affect by operation of the coal-fired power plant adjacent to the tank farm. Waste solutions in each of the tanks were observed to be continuously absorbing carbon dioxide. The rate of absorption of carbon dioxide decreased linearly w… more

The influence of waste variability on the properties and phase stability of the West Valley reference glass

Description: A year long study of the effects of waste variability on properties and phase stability of the West Valley reference glass has been conducted. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, glass transition temperature, density, and liquidus temperature have been measured for a series of glasses where the weight fraction of Al{sub 2}0{sub 3}, Fe{sub 2}0{sub 3}, NiO, MnO{sub 2}, Cr{sub 2}O{sub 3}, and P{sub 2}0{sub 5}, was varied systematically around the reference glass composition. Characteristics of soils and saprolite in Solid Waste Storage Area 6

Description: Solid Waste Storage Area 6 (SWSA-6) is one of the disposal sites for solid low-level radioactive waste at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Soils and saprolites from the site were characterized to provide base line information to initiate assessment for remedial actions and closure plans. Physical, chemical, mineralogical, and engineering analyses were conducted on soil and saprolite samples.

Characterization of organics in the feed streams for the H/F Effluent Treatment Facility

Description: Analysis of weekly samples from the F- and H-area treblers indicates that tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) is the major organic species in the feed to the F/H Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF). Concentrations up to 100 mg/L were observed, with an average of 50 mg/L from F-area and 3 mg/L from H-area. Normal paraffinic hydrocarbons (NPH) are present in lesser amounts, ranging up to 4 mg/L. These two species, both foulants of the reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, account for almost all of the dissolved o… more

Operation in pulsed mode at RTNS-II

Description: An experiment was done with a D/sup +/ ion source on a test stand, after which the pulsing system was installed on an RTNS-II neutron source to demonstrate its feasibility as an intense pulsed neutron source. The ion source MATS-II was run in the pulsed mode. A maximum current of 115 mA was obtained by arc pulsing, but with a pulse width of more than 200 msec. In the pulsed operation of RTNS-II, the beam was accelerated up to 360 keV and a maximum current of 80 mA was obtained on the rotating t… more

Characteristics of fuel crud and its impact on storage, handling, and shipment of spent fuel. [Fuel crud]

Description: Corrosion products, called ''crud,'' form on out-of-reactor surfaces of nuclear reactor systems and are transported by reactor coolant to the core, where they deposit on external fuel-rod cladding surfaces and are activated by nuclear reactions. After discharge of spent fuel from a reactor, spallation of radioactive crud from the fuel rods could impact wet or dry storage operations, handling (including rod consolidation), and shipping. It is the purpose of this report to review earlier (1970s) … more
