Behavior of a Bi-Material Cylinder Including the Effects of Fracture

Description: A finite element method is presented which utilizes a three dimensional quadrilateral finite element with a stiffness matrix developed in cylindrical coordinated. The method is used to study the behavior of layer cylinders due to asymmetric static thermal loadings. Two types of bonding, rigid and flexible are considered. Additional examples including a pressurized thick walled cylinder and a cylindrical shell under pressure and thermal loadings are presented.

Consistent Properties of Composite Formation Under a Binary Relation

Description: In this paper we study the properties of a relation, H, between two sets, X and Y, H ⊆ X x Y. We wish to determine when the existence of H between some elements of X and Y implies the existence of H between other composite elements of X and Y. The aim is to characterize a relation by its extension or restriction to composite elements.

Dynamics of Wheeled Vehicles, Report 1: A Mathematical Model for the Traversal of Rigid Obstacles by a Pneumatic Tire, Appendix B: Digital Implementation of Segmented Tire Model

Description: Summary: "This appendix presents the procedures for digital implementation of the segmented tire model, developed in the basic report for an analog computer. Two procedures are required: (a) determination of the segment spring coefficient from measured load-deflection test results, and (b) computation of the resultant force vector transmitted to the axle. Digital programs for both procedures were written in Fortran IV for a GE-420 system, and are included" (p. xi).

Effect of Cesium Pressure on Thermionic Stability

Description: It is shown that under certain conditions of heat input, reservoir temperature, and load voltage or resistance a thermionic converter can equilibrate at two radically different operation points, corresponding to conditions of high and low cesium coverage. Moreover, abrupt transitions between these operating regimes, accompanied by a temperature rise of hundreds of degrees, can occur whenever the critical heat generation rate for a given reservoir temperature is exceeded. To provide an adequate … more
