Surface Ionization Method of Detecting Halogen-Bearing Gases

Description: In an experimental investigation of positive ion production at heated surfaces, the primary objective was to develop a stable quantitative detector suitable for studies of movements of a gaseous tracer in the atmosphere or other large gaseous masses. Freon-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) is well qualified as a tracer, srnce it is harmless to animals, plants, and equipment under ordinary conditions, is undetectable, except by special apparatus, and is not too expensive, considering that 0.1 ppm may… more

Comparative evaluation of effects of ozonated and chlorinated thermal discharges on estuarine and freshwater organisms

Description: Although limited, the results of tests evaluating the comparative effects of chlorinated and ozonated thermal discharges on mummichog and white perch indicate that the biological effects of ozonation are much less severe than those of chlorination. The data also show white perch to be more sensitive than mummichog to the tested biocides. The relative effects of ozonation and chlorination in the behavioral studies were similar to those observed in the toxicity studies. Cough rates were higher in… more

Fission product source terms for the LWR loss-of-coolant accident

Description: Models for cesium and iodine release from light-water reactor (LWR) fuel rods failed in steam were formulated based on experimental fission product release data from several types of failed LWR fuel rods. The models were applied to a pressurized water reactor (PWR) undergoing a hypothetical loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) temperature transient. Calculated total iodine and cesium releases from the fuel rods were 0.053 and 0.025% of the total reactor inventories of these elements, respectively, w… more

Evaluation of silver mordenite for radioiodine retention at the PUREX Process Facility Modification

Description: To determine the bed-loading capacities and the effluent iodine concentrations at normal, off-normal, and standby conditions, PNL performed a series of statistically designed parametric tests using a bed of AgZ 12 cm long x 1 cm diameter. In addition, tests were performed to determine the effect of bed length, the effect of a second bed, the effect of extended standby conditions, and the efficiency of hydrogen-reduced AgZ (Ag/sup 0/Z). Results of these experiments are presented in this report.

Requirements for an ES and H assurance program at the working levels of organization

Description: Means by which the disciplines of quality assurance (QA), reliability (R), and human factors (HF) might be used to the advantage of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES and H) programs are being investigated. A generalized model assurance program, based on QA, R, and HF principles but specifically tailored to ES and H program needs, has been developed. Current studies address implementation of the model assurance program at the working levels of organization. It appears that the only way practic… more

Effects of Reagent Translational and Vibrational Energy on the Dynamics of Endothermic Reactions

Description: The endothermic reactions Br + CH/sub 3/I ..-->.. CH/sub 3/ + IBr (..delta..H/sub 0//sup 0/ = 13 kcal/mole) and Br + CF/sub 3/I ..-->.. CF/sub 3/ + IBr (..delta..H/sub 0//sup 0/ = 11 kcal/mole) have been studied by the crossed molecular beams method. Detailed center-of-mass contour maps of the IBr product flux as a function of recoil velocity and scattering angle are derived. For both systems it is found that the IBr product is sharply backward scattered with respect to the incident Br dirction… more

Surface structures and surface-atom vibrations determined using photoelectron diffraction

Description: Surface structures of {radical}3 {times} {radical}3 R30{degrees} Cl/Ni(111) and c(2 {times} 2)Cl/Cu(001) were determined using low- temperature angle-resolved photoemission extended fine structure (ARPEFS), which yields both more accurate surface and near-surface structural information for deeper substrate layers. A study of surface-atom vibrations for {radical}3 {times} {radical}3 R30{degrees} Cl/Ni(111) and c(2 {times} 2)Cl/Cu(001) was made using temperature-dependent ARPEFS. A model for pred… more

Phase 1 of the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction Project

Description: For more than 40 years, the US government made plutonium for nuclear weapons at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. Radioactive materials were released to both the air and water from Hanford. People could have been exposed to these materials, called radionuclides. The Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction (HEDR) Project is a multi-year scientific study to estimate the radiation doses the public may have received as a results of these releases. The study began in 1988. During … more

Chemical characteristics of the major thermal springs of Montana

Description: Twenty-one thermal springs in western Montana were sampled for chemical, isotope, and gas compositions. Most of the springs issue dilute to slightly saline sodium-bicarbonate waters of neutral to slightly alkaline pH. A few of the springs issue sodium-mixed anion waters of near neutral pH. Fluoride concentrations are high in most of the thermal waters, up to 18 miligrams per litre, while F/Cl ratios range from 3/1 in the dilute waters to 1/10 in the slightly saline waters. Most of the springs a… more
