The application of computers to controlled thermonuclear research. A report to the USAEC Division of Controlled Thermonuclear Research

Description: This report surveys the need for large computers in analyzing the properties of magnetically confined plasmas and simulating the characteristics of fusion reactors. The major conclusion of the report is that, to meet the program schedule developed by Magnetic Confinement Systems, it would be necessary to immediately scale up the CTR (controlled thermonuclear research) computerized effort to a level of two Class IV computers by FY 1975. Based on this report, and in an attempt to best meet this n… more

Behavior of ultrasonic tagged chinook salmon and steelhead trout migrating past Hanford thermal discharges (1967)

Description: Ultrasonic tagged, adult chinook salmon and steelhead trout were tracked in the Columbia River in 1967 during upstream migration past cooling water discharges from nuclear reactors. All fish migrated near shorelines, showing preference for the river bank opposite reactors. Clear responses to local temperaature differences were exhibited by few fish, these responses being to small shoreline seepages rather than to main centerchannel outfalls. (auth)

Comments on capabilities, limitations, and correctness of Petri nets. Report 26

Description: Petri nets were one of the earliest contributions to the theory of parallel computations and appear to be a natural way to represent the coordination of asynchronous events. Petri nets, however, are not restricted to modelling coordinates in computer systems. Any system where there are loosely connected essentially independent processes that proceed in an asynchronous marner can be modelled using Petri nets and should be useful in modelling business systems and biological systems.
