Radiochemical analysis of the first plateout probe from the Fort St. Vrain high-temperature gas-cooled reactor

Description: This report presents the analysis of radioactive elements on the first plateout probe from the Fort St. Vrain high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. The plateout probe is a device which samples the primary coolant for condensible fission products. Circuit inventories of individual radionuclides are estimated from the probe analysis. The analysis shows that the radioactive contamination in the primary circuit is remarkable low, with activation product concentrations much greater than that of fissi… more

Research for Electric Energy Systems

Description: This report documents the technical progress in investigations. The first investigation is concerned with the measurement of magnetic fields in support of epidemiogical and in vitro studies of biological field effects. NIST cohosted a workshop on exposure and biological parameters that should be considered during the vitro studies with extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic and electric fields. Also, equations were developed to predict the magnetic field in a parallel plate magnetic field expos… more

Analysis of the mist lift process for mist flow open-cycle OTEC

Description: Preliminary results are presented of a numerical analysis to study the open-cycle mist flow process for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Emphasis in the analysis is on the mass transfer and fluid mechanics of the steady-state mist flow. The analysis is based on two one-dimensional models of the mist lift process: a single-group model describes a mist composed of a single size of drops and a multigroup model considers a spectrum of drop sizes. The single-group model predicts that the lift… more

Is a 4-train support ''always'' more reliable than a 2-train support

Description: Once the gross features of a frontline fluid system have been defined, one must consider what support system configuration will provide the best overall system performance. This paper considers different dc bus configurations for a given emergency feedwater system. Results indicate that a four-train support system (i.e., 4 dc buses) gives a lower system unavailability for transients, but a higher system unavailability for Anticipated Transients Without Scram (ATWS), than a two-train support sys… more

Probability of pipe fracture in the primary coolant loop of a PWR plant. Volume 9. PRAISE computer code user's manual. Load Combination Program Project I final report

Description: The PRAISE (Piping Reliability Analysis Including Seismic Events) computer code estimates the influence of earthquakes on the probability of failure at a weld joint in the primary coolant system of a pressurized water reactor. Failure, either a through-wall defect (leak) or a complete pipe severance (a large-LOCA), is assumed to be caused by fatigue crack growth of an as-fabricated interior surface circumferential defect. These defects are assumed to be two-dimensional and semi-elliptical in sh… more

Quench detection by fluid dynamic means in cable-in-conduit superconductors

Description: The tight confinement of the helium in cable-in-conduit superconductors creates protection problems because of the substantial pressure rise that can occur during a quench. But the same pressure rise offers the useful possibility of a non-electrical means of detecting incipient quenches by monitoring the outflow from the various hydraulic paths of the magnet. If the method is to work, the signal must be large enough to be detected unambiguously at an early enough time, and the signal must not d… more

Sodium-fire control by space isolation with nitrogen flooding: FFTF proof test F2

Description: Sodium fire protection by space isolation with nitrogen flooding was evaluated by performing a large-scale sodium fire test within a mockup of an FFTF secondary sodium system pipeway. The full scale (3350 ft/sup 3/) mockup was initially filled with air and its leak tightness set to correspond to that expected in an actual FFTF pipeway. The basis for specifying the rate of nitrogen flood gas is discussed ad the experimental verification provided. Nitrogen flooding was activated 15 minutes after … more

Description: This document reports on the cost analysis previously performed for a subatmospheric Brayton cycle system sized to operate off the waste heat of a nominal 200-ton per day glass container furnace. Along with product value and operating costs, the cost data for system components is one of the essential elements required for analyses and prediction of the return-on-investment for a Brayton system. The expected ROI or payback will in turn impact the marketability of the system. This report describe… more

Analysis of MSIV-ATWS events with the BNL plant analyzer

Description: There are automatic safety features and operator-initiated emergency procedures which influence the sequence of events until the time when the standby liquid control system (SLCS), or other attempts to get control rods inserted, can effect shutdown of the core. One emergency procedure for a BWR/4 would require the operator to reduce the flow of high pressure coolant injection (HPCI) into the reactor. The core inlet flow rate at this time would be due to natural circulation and the reduced flow … more

Advective-diffusive/dispersive transport of chemically reacting species in hydrothermal systems. Final report, FY83-85

Description: A general formulation of multi-phase fluid flow coupled to chemical reactions was developed based on a continuum description of porous media. A preliminary version of the computer code MCCTM was constructed which implemented the general equations for a single phase fluid. The computer code MCCTM incorporates mass transport by advection-diffusion/dispersion in a one-dimensional porous medium coupled to reversible and irreversible, homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions. These reactions… more

Probability of pipe fracture in the primary coolant loop of a PWR plant. Volume 5. Probabilistic fracture mechanics analysis. Load Combination Program Project I final report

Description: The primary purpose of the Load Combination Program covered in this report is to estimate the probability of a seismic induced LOCA in the primary piping of a commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR). Best estimates, rather than upper bound results are desired. This was accomplished by use of a fracture mechanics model that employs a random distribution of initial cracks in the piping welds. Estimates of the probability of cracks of various sizes initially existing in the welds are combined w… more

Description: Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of sensitized Type 304 stainless steel (SS) has been a recurrent problem in the high-temperature water environment of boiling-water-reactors (BWRs) over the past two decades. The synergistic effects of environmental and material variables on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of Type 304 SS were investigated at 289/sup 0/C by means of constant-extension-rate-tensile (CERT) tests at a strain rate of 1 x 10/sup -6//s.
