Description: The Department of Energy and the Department of Defense are actively pursuing a program of nuclear weapons testing by underground explosions at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Over the past 11 years, scores of tests have been conducted and the safety record is very good. Design and implementation of a fiber-optic gamma-measurement system

Description: The design and implementation of the downhole portion of a measuring system for gamma rays is presented. Included are three alternative designs for radiation-resistant collimating and condensing lenses, sample cells, turning mirrors, and fiber-optic termination techniques. Also discussed are mechanical mounts and positioners, shielding, alignment, test methods, and field installation. Some general design suggestions for optical systems in adverse environments are also presented.

Hanford ferrocyanide waste chemistry and reactivity preliminary catalyst and initiator screening studies

Description: During the 1950s, ferrocyanide was used to scavenge radiocesium from aqueous nitrate-containing Hanford wastes. During the production of defense materials and while these wastes were stored in high-level waste tanks at the Hanford Site, some of these wastes were likely mixed with other waste constituents and materials. Detonator-activated ball shutter

Description: A detonator-activated ball shutter for closing an aperture in about 300 ..mu..seconds is disclosed. The ball shutter containing an aperture through which light, etc., passes, is closed by firing a detonator which propels a projectile for rotating the ball shutter, thereby blocking passage through the aperture.

Numerical and experimental investigation of simulated explosions inside a flow network

Description: The results of a numerical and an experimental study of a flow network subjected to a simulated explosion are presented. The numerical simulation uses a computer code called EVENT that predicts the response of a system under gas-dynamic stress conditions. Wire-rope emplacement of diagnostics systems

Description: The study reported here was initiated to determine if, with the Cable Downhole System (CDS) currently under development, there is an advantage to using continuous wire rope to lower the emplacement package to the bottom of the hole. Geology of the U12n. 02 (Midi Mist) drift, and postshot observations, Rainier Mesa, Area 12, Nevada Test Site

Description: Mining of the Ul2n.02 drift for the Midi Mist event started on December 31, 1965, in Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, and was completed on December 30, 1966. The drift was mined along a bearing of S. 65/sup 0/ W. at an altitude of 1,850.2 m (6,070.2 ft) to a length of 643 m (2,109 ft). The drift lies in tunnel bed 4 and penetrates stratigraphically up the section through sub-units 4AB, 4CD, 4E, 4F, 4G, 4H, and 4J, all of Tertiary age. Quantification of neptunium by isotope dilution mass spectrometry

Description: A surface ionization-diffusion-type ionization source that uses a rhenium filament overplated with platinum has been developed and optimized for 0.1-ng neptunium samples. Resurrection of neutrinos as dark matter

Description: It is shown that new observations of large scale structure in the universe (voids, foam, and large-scale velocity fields) are best understood if the dominant matter of the universe is in the form of massive (9eV less than or equal to m/sub nu/ less than or equal to 35 eV) neutrinos.
