Energy dependence of the optical model of neutron scattering from niobium

Description: Neutron differential-elastic-scattering cross sections of niobium were measured from 1.5 to 10.0 MeV at intervals of less than or equal to200 keV below 4.0 MeV, and of approx. =500 keV from 4.0 to 10.0 MeV. Ten to more than fifty differential-cross-section values were determined at each incident energy, distributed over the angular range approx. =20 to 160/sup 0/. The observed values were interpreted in the context of the spherical optical-statistical model. It was found that the volume integra… more

Neutron Spectral Measurements in the D0 Collision Hall

Description: The characterization of radiation fields is important to many applications. For example, in operational health physics, the choice of instrumentation for monitoring and of a personnel dosimeter for use by radiation workers depend on both the type and spectral characteristics of the radiation. Furthermore, the spectral distribution of the fluence affects radiation damage estimates for materials for new or replacement equipment within the radiation environment. At the same time, knowledge of the … more

Internal Energy Dependence of Molecular Condensation Coefficients Determined From Molecular Beam Surface Scattering Experiments

Description: An experiment was performed which confirms the existence of an internal mode dependence of molecular sticking probabilities for collisions of molecules with a cold surface. The scattering of a velocity selected effusive beam of CCl{sub 4} from a 90 K CC1{sub 4} ice surface has been studied at five translational velocities and for two different internal temperatures. At a surface temperature of 90 K (approx. 99% sticking probability) a four fold increase in reflected intensity was observed for t… more

Working model for Ge(Li) detector counting efficiencies

Description: A practical model has been developed that is capable of describing the overall Ge(Li) detection efficiency as a function of several known or measurable parameters such as gamma-ray energy, source-to-detector distance, detector dimensions, source extension (area and volume), source composition, and external absorbers. The algorithms of this model permit the evaluation of a large variety of sample shapes, sizes, material compositions, and source strengths with a single initial detector calibratio… more

Magnetic fringe-field neutron-beam depolarization. [Depolarization in fringing field of polarized-proton target]

Description: Depolarization of a polarized neutron beam as a result of spin-flip (Majorana) transitions is calculated for a neutron beam that traverses the fringe field of a typical laboratory electromagnet. The general quantum mechanical equations of motion previously given for this system are used to write the solution as a set of simultaneous equations in which the dependent variables are polarization probability amplitudes and the independent variable is distance traveled by the neutrons. Asymptotic sol… more

Mass identified particle production and Bose Einstein correlations at 1800 GeV

Description: Results were shown on transverse momentum distributions of {pi}, k and p from Fermilab experiment E735. This experiment, related to the search for quark gluon plasma, was run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1800 GeV. Dependence of particle ratios on transverse momentum and center of mass energies was shown. Results were also shown on Bose Einstein correlations between pairs of identical pions and a measure of size and lifetime of the source.

Energy flow in a hadronic cascade: Application to hadroncalorimetry

Description: The hadronic cascade description developed in an earlierpaper is extended to the response of an idealized fine-sampling hadroncalorimeter. Calorimeter response is largely determined by the transferof energy E_e from the hadronic to the electromagnetic sector via \pi0production. Fluctuations in this quantity produce the "constant term" inhadron calorimeter resolution. The increase of its fractional mean, f_\rmem^0= \vevE_e/E, with increasing incident energy E causes the energydependence of the \… more

Uncertainty Budget and Efficiency Analysis for the 239Pu (n,2ny) Partial Reaction Cross-Section Measurements

Description: The {sup 239}Pu(n,2n{gamma}){sup 238}Pu partial reaction cross-section, {sigma}{sub (n,2n{gamma})}, has been measured as a function of neutron energy for several transitions in {sup 238}Pu. Partial {gamma}-ray cross sections for yrast, ''collector'' transitions, can provide especially valuable constraints on the magnitude and shape of the total (n,2n) reaction cross-section. In essence, nuclear reaction models will be used to infer the shape and magnitude of the total (n,2n) reaction cross-sect… more

Review and combination of experimental results for neutron emission per fission of /sup 232/Th. [1 to 16 MeV]

Description: An analysis was made of the existing experimental data for ..nu..-bar(E) of /sup 232/Th, the average number of neutrons emitted per fission of /sup 232/Th. This analysis suggests that a single linear function of the neutron energy describes the data within their uncertainties. The parameters of the linear function and their uncertainties are given. 1 figure, 5 tables.

Fusion cross sections and the new dynamics

Description: The prediction of the need for an extra push over the interaction barrier in order to make the heavier nuclei fuse is made the basis of a simple algebraic theory for the energy-dependence of the fusion cross-section. A comparison with recent experiments promises to provide a quantitative test of the New Dynamics (the theory of macroscopic nuclear shape evolutions based on the one-body dissipation concept).

Study of possible energy upgrade for the ALS and modeling of the ``Real Lattice`` for the diagnosis of lattice problems

Description: We have studied change of expected performance of the Advanced Light Source storage ring at LBL for the (design) nominal and maximum energy of 1.5 and 1.9 GeV respectively. Furthermore, we have also studied a possible increase to 2.3 GeV by modeling the change of dynamical aperture caused by saturation of the magnets. Independently, we have also modeled the beam`s trajectory at injection. Comparison with bpm data from early storage ring commissioning led to the diagnosis of a major lattice erro… more

Hard photodisintegration of a proton pair in {sup 3}He

Description: Hard photodisintegration of the deuteron has been extensively studied in order to understand the dynamics of the transition from hadronic to quark-gluon descriptions of the strong interaction. In this work, we discuss the extension of this program to hard photodisintegration of a pp pair in the {sup 3}He nucleus. Experimental confirmation of new features predicted here for the suggested reaction would advance our understanding of hard nuclear reactions. A main prediction, in contrast with low-e… more
