Weld Penetration and Defect Control

Description: Highly engineered designs increasingly require the use of improved materials and sophisticated manufacturing techniques. To obtain optimal performance from these engineered products, improved weld properties and joint reliability are a necessarily. This requirement for improved weld performance and reliability has led to the development of high-performance welding systems in which pre-programmed parameters are specified before any welding takes place. These automated systems however lack the ab… more

Precision Deburring Using NC and Robot Equipment. Final Report

Description: Deburring precision miniature components is often time consuming and inconsistent. Although robots are available for deburring parts, they are not precise enough for precision miniature parts. Numerical control (NC) machining can provide edge break consistencies to meet requirements such as 76.2-..mu..m maximum edge break (chamfer). Although NC machining has a number of technical limitations which prohibits its use on many geometries, it can be an effective approach to features that are particu… more

Large scale copper vapor laser computer control system

Description: High power pulse copper vapor laser systems consist of a master oscillator and numerous power amplifiers. Large systems used in laser isotope separation experiments require several automatic control systems. The rapid development of compact mini computers over the past several years has enabled the implementation of sophisticated computer controlled copper vapor laser systems. Present systems provide automatic time synchronization and input power stabilization. Future systems will incorporate s… more

The Effects of Structured Approaches to Computer Implementation in Small Businesses: A Study of the Relationships Between Level of Systematic Approach and Implementation Time, Implementation Cost, User Satisfaction and Level of Integration

Description: The purpose of this research is to determine the effects of systematic approach to computer integration on implementation cost, implementation time, user satisfaction, and level of integration in small business environments. It is believed that decreased costs and implementation time result from the use of systematic approaches to computer integration. Systematic approaches may also result in higher user satisfaction and a higher level of system integration.

Optimal Knot Selection for Least-squares Fitting of Noisy Data with Spline Functions

Description: An automatic data-smoothing algorithm for data from digital oscilloscopes is described. The algorithm adjusts the bandwidth of the filtering as a function of time to provide minimum mean squared error at each time. It produces an estimate of the root-mean-square error as a function of time and does so without any statistical assumptions about the unknown signal. The algorithm is based on least-squares fitting to the data of cubic spline functions.

Array automated assembly. Phase 2. Quarterly report for period ending March 31, 1979

Description: Research on the technology readiness of a proposed process sequence for the low-cost fabrication of photovoltaic modules is described. Integration of the process sequence using non-textured 2.125 inch square wafers was initiated during this period. Considerable difficulties were encountered requiring process and material modifications. These include: (1) replacement of N-250 spray-on diffusion source with PX-10 source; and (2) modification of the firing cycles for printed silver and printed alu… more

Automatic generation of synchronization instructions for parallel processors

Description: The development of high speed parallel multi-processors, capable of parallel execution of doacross and forall loops, has stimulated the development of compilers to transform serial FORTRAN programs to parallel forms. One of the duties of such a compiler must be to place synchronization instructions in the parallel version of the program to insure the legal execution order of doacross and forall loops. This thesis gives strategies usable by a compiler to generate these synchronization instructio… more

Phase 2 of the array automated assembly task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project. Quarterly report no. 6, January 1-March 31, 1979

Description: Using silk screened evaporated and sputtered Al as the metal source, the formation of Al back surface fields (BSF) was studied. The most satisfactory results were those obtained with the sputtered Al and in which open circuit voltages (V/sub oc/) of 0.585v (12 ..cap omega.. cm FZ silicon) have been achieved. The ultrasonic interconnect process is being verified. The process is generally satisfactory, but increased pull-strength may be obtained if some form of sintering is carried out on the met… more

Automatic tracking of the intersection of a laser and electron beam

Description: For the Compton Polarimeter experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator the crossing point of a laser beam and an electron beam must be kept accurate and stable. An electronic system is described for the automatic tracking and correcting of the beam crossing. A remote CCD camera, relatively insensitive to electromagnetic disturbance, records small displacements of the pulsed laser beam. Video signals are analyzed at a remote station, the amount of drift from a selected reference point determi… more

Description: An automation procedure based on the principles of image processing is proposed to perform the analysis of pyrite/minerals liberation of coal. To make the automated image analysis system possible, a data base of the light reflectance characteristics of different coal constituents must be established. Characterization of coal images through the analysis of their histogram was conducted. In general, it was found that the distinction of coal particles or particle groups may be accomplished by dete… more

Benchmark problems in which equality plays the major role

Description: We have recently heard rumors that researchers are again studying paramodulation [Wos87] in the context of strategy for its control. In part to facilitate such research, and in part to provide test problems for evaluating other approaches to equality-oriented reasoning, we offer in this article a set of benchmark problems in which equality plays the dominant role. The test problems are taken from group theory, Robbins algebra, combinatory logic, and other areas. For each problem, we include app… more

Operator overloading as an enabling technology for automatic differentiation

Description: We present an example of the science that is enabled by object-oriented programming techniques. Scientific computation often needs derivatives for solving nonlinear systems such as those arising in many PDE algorithms, optimization, parameter identification, stiff ordinary differential equations, or sensitivity analysis. Automatic differentiation computes derivatives accurately and efficiently by applying the chain rule to each arithmetic operation or elementary function. Operator overloading e… more

Automation of constrained-value business forms

Description: Expert systems can improve many business tasks. However, the nature of a constrained-value business form can result in a rule base that contains circular reasoning, unsuitable for expert system implementation. A methodology is presented for restructuring such a rule base for compatibility with a backward-chaining expert system.
