Production of Single Crystal Copper Films at Low Temperatures

Description: A method is described for the production of single‐crystal films of copper at temperatures as low as −40°C. This method utilizes the epitaxy of copper on rock salt. A thin layer of copper is evaporated on a single crystal of salt at 350°C. Then a thick layer is evaporated at the low temperature. Prebunching by Velocity Modulation in Linear Accelerators

Description: Methods of prebatching the electron beam by velocity-modulation techniques prior to injection into a linear accelerator are discussed. A particular method (i.e., bunching at the injection energy) is analyzed in detail for one- and tw0-cavidy bunching. EGCR Core Structural Analysis: The Effects of Fast-Neuron Irradiation and the Bowing Characteristics of the Graphite Columns

Description: An analysis of the EGCR core structure was made to determine the lateral deflections (bowing) of the graphite columns resulting from shrinkage caused by fast-neuron irradiation, the life expectancy of each column due to restraints imposed on the bowing, and the reaction forces induced in the supporting structures. Preliminary Report on 2% U235-Enriched UF4-C25H52 Critical Assemblies

Description: A series of critical experiments with blocks of 2% U235-enriched UF4-C25H52 has been initiated at the ORNL Critical Experiments Facility. Thus far assemblies with H:U235 atomic ratios of 195 and 294 have been built in parallelepipedal and simulated cylindrical geometries, both reflected and unreflected. Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

Description: A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

HRP Dynamic Slurry Corrosion Studies : Quarter Ending April 30, 1957

Description: The assembly of a second thorium oxide slurry corrosion test facility, loop BS, has been completed and 2010 hr of operation on slurry have been logged. This second test loop has proved satisfactory from an .operational standpoint. Corrosion data and operational observations are given for six thorium oxide slurry runs made at 300 C in 100A pump loops BS and CS. Operation of the Distillation Method for the Determination of Sodium Oxide in NaK During the Calibration of a Plug Indicator

Description: The distillation method (Argonne Sampler) for the analysis of sodium oxide in NaK was used to calibrate a plug indicator. The description of the equipment, procedure, and experiences with the Argonne Samplers are presented in great detail to aid future users of this method. Report of Slurry Blanket Test Run SM-2

Description: Run SM-2 was run to determine whether a sulfated ThO2 slurry could be handled in a hydrodynamic system similar to the HRT test blanket. It was found that the ThO2 concentration circulating in the pipes was consistently 50% or less of the expected concentration based on the quantity of the oxide changed. The run lasted 1730 hours.
