Description: This paper describes the status of the stadium-sized National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world's largest laser system and first operational multi-megajoule laser. SMALL-SCALE IMPACT SENSITIVITY TESTING ON EDC37

Description: EDC37 was tested at LLNL to determine its impact sensitivity in the LLNL's drop hammer system. The results showed that impact sensitivities of the samples were between 86 cm and 156 cm, depending on test methods. EDC37 is a plastic bonded explosive consisting of 90% HMX, 1% nitrocellulose and binder. We recently conducted impact sensitivity testing in our drop hammer system and the results are presented in this report.

Quantifying uncertainties of a Soil-Foundation Structure-Interaction System under Seismic Excitation

Description: We applied a spectrum of uncertainty quantification (UQ) techniques to the study of a two-dimensional soil-foundation-structure-interaction (2DSFSI) system (obtained from Professor Conte at UCSD) subjected to earthquake excitation. In the process we varied 19 uncertain parameters describing material properties of the structure and the soil. We present in detail the results for the different stages of our UQ analyses.

Radiographic Capabilities of the MERCURY Monte Carlo Code

PBXN-9 Ignition Kinetics and Deflagration Rates

Description: The ignition kinetics and deflagration rates of PBXN-9 were measured using specially designed instruments at LLNL and compared with previous work on similar HMX based materials. Ignition kinetics were measured based on the One Dimensional Time-to-Explosion combined with ALE3D modeling. High Spectral Resolution X-ray Observation of Magnetic CVs: EX Hya

Description: In magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) the primary is a highly magnetized white dwarf (WD) whose field controls the accretion flow close to the WD, leading to a shock and accretion column that radiate chiefly in X-rays. Laser-Material Interaction Studies Utilizing the Solid-State Heat Capacity Laser

Description: A variety of laser-material interaction experiments have been conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) utilizing the solid-state heat capacity laser (SSHCL). For these series of experiments, laser output power is 25kW, on-target laser spot sizes of up to 16 cm by 16 cm square, with air speeds of approximately 100 meters per second flowing across the laser-target interaction surface as shown in Figure 1. The empirical results obtained are used to validate our simulation models.
