Social Support and Type II Diabetes in Older Married Hispanic Americans

Description: Undergraduate thesis exploring psychosocial factors of type II diabetes in older married adults of the Hispanic American population. It is proposed that social support mitigates the effect of psychosocial problems on self-care behavior and posited that greater social support in the form of familial and spousal relationships is related to better health outcomes, specifically better self-reported disease self-management of type II diabetes in married Hispanics.

[Washington on the Brazos historic site outdoor exhibit]

Description: Photograph of the Washington on the Brazos historic site and outdoor exhibit in Washington County, Texas. Three figures dressed as reenactors stand on the right side of the rope divider in the image. One man is wearing a tan hat, blue shirt, and brown pants and the other is dressed in a mid-nineteenth century wartime outfit with a black hat, button up blue jacket and an over the shoulder canvas bag. On the same side as the reenactors are props reminiscent of the Mexican American war and historical events that took place on the Brazos River, and include two white awnings, a wooden wagon, and benches. About half a dozen visitors of the outdoor exhibit stand on the left side of the rope and two strollers are visible. Trees surround the exhibit and the day appears to be overcast with grey clouds overhead.

Lipoxygenase-mediated Oxidation of Polyunsaturated N-Acylethanolamines in Arabidopsis

Description: Article hypothesizing that lipoxygenase (LOX) participated in the metabolism of PU-NAEs through the formation of NAE-oxylipins. The data suggests that Arabidopsis LOXs indeed compete with FAAH to metabolize PU-NAEs during seedling establishment. Identification of endogenous amide-conjugated oxylipins suggests potential significance of these metabolites in vivo, and FAAH mutants may offer opportunities to address this in the future.

The Transcriptional Co-activator MBF1c Is a Key Regulator of Thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Description: Article reporting that the highly conserved transcriptional co-activator, MBF1c (multiprotein bridging factor 1c), is a key regulator of thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Results provide evidence for the existence of a tightly coordinated heat stress-response network, involving trehalose-, SA-, and ethylene-signaling pathways, that is under the control of MBF1c.

Protein Modification by ADP-ribose via Acid-labile Linkages

Description: Article describing the preparation and chemical characterization of low molecular weight conjugates that were used as models for an acetal linkage between ADP-ribose and the hydroxyl group of a protein acceptor such as serine, threonine, tyrosine, hydroxyproline, or hydroxylysine residues. The amount of modification was approximately 16 pmol of ADP-ribose per mg of total protein, and proteins modified by acid-labile linkages were detected in all subcellular fractions examined, suggesting that the scope of this modification in vivo is broad.
