THE HEAT CAPACITY OF BERYLLIUM CARBIDE POWDER IN STAINLESS STEEL CAPSULES AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE (400-1800 F)

Description: The mean heat capacity of a sample of powdered beryllium carbide, a possible moderator material for a nuclear reactor, was determined as a function of temperature. A thin-walled stainless steel capsule containing the material was heated in an electric furnace and dropped into a water calorimeter. The following linear equation for mean heat capacity over the temperature range 50 f C-T f C as a function of temperature, T, was derived from the data by the method of least squares: C/sub p/ = 0.299 … more

THE HEAT CAPACITY OF U$sub 3$O$sub 8$ POWDER AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE (400-1800 F)

Description: The mean heat capacity of a sample of powdered U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ was determined as a function of temperature from measurements of heat content. A thin-walled nickel capsule containing the material was heated in an electric furnace and dropped into a water calorimeter The Mean heat capacity values calculated from the experimental data were nearly constant over the temperature range, room temperture to 250-975 deg C (482-1790 deg F). The average value was 0.074 plus or minus 0.004 cal gm/sup -1EDE… more

A Proposed Experimental Test of the Neutrino Theory

Description: The experiment outlined in this proposal has the possibility of giving an answer to the important question, 'Does the neutrino exist'? It is unfortunate that at the present time, there is no convincing experimental that neutrinos exist. Two recent articles review the status of various experiments which could give information about neutrinos. In general, these experiments give results in agreement with the predictions of beta decay theory. But actually, if even the most complete of the 'recoil t… more

The Critical Mass of a Spherical Reactor with Variable Intrinsic Buckling

Description: Abstract: "The critical mass both of an untamped and water-tamped sphere with parabolic radial variation of the intrinsic buckling is calculated by a perturbation method. The result is applied to finding the minimum critical mass of plutonium in water suspension with infinite water temper; the calculations show that the minimum critical mass at constant concentration may be reduced by an amount of the order of 7.6% when the concentration of plutonium is permitted to vary throughout the suspensi… more

Quantitative Study of Variations in Concentration of Glycerol and Aerosol OT on Foaming Volume of Oil at Room Temperature

Description: "The amount of foam that can be formed in the presence of certain pure chemical agents was investigated by a new method. The effect of variations in concentration and proportion of Aerosol OT and glycerol was studied and the effects of various other mixtures have been given for comparison. Both Gulf Agent and Aerosol-OT - glycerol mixtures, when present in comparable amounts, prohibited the formation of the normal volumes of foam to the same extent and in the optimum cases reduced it to only on… more

Effect of Various Compounds in Use With Airplane Engines Upon Foaming of Aircraft Lubricating Oil

Description: Report presenting an investigation of aircraft lubricating oil that is contaminated with various materials used in connection with airplane engines or contained in the fuel. Over 60 of the materials have been tested to determine their influence on the foaming of an aircraft lubricating oil. All but 13 of the compounds were found to have a small or negligible effect, but the other 13 were found to be strong foaming agents.

Comparison between predicted and observed performance of gas-turbine stator blade designed for free-vortex flow

Description: Report presenting a comparison between the calculated design performance of a gas-turbine stator blade and its performance in a sector of an annular cascade tunnel. The gas velocities on the blade surface were computed by the stress filament method and compared with experimental values, with which they agreed satisfactorily. Results regarding discharge angle, vane-surface-velocity distribution, tangential- and axial-velocity distribution, and radial-equilibrium consideration are provided.

Plastic buckling of simply supported compressed plates

Description: Report presenting an investigation to ascertain the validity of various theories for the plastic buckling of compressed simply supported plates by means of local-instability tests of drawn square tubes of 14S-T6 aluminum alloy. The results obtained were in excellent agreement with Stowell's unified theory for the plastic buckling of columns and plates.

Critical shear stress of infinitely long, simply supported plate with transverse stiffeners

Description: From Summary: "A theoretical solution is given for the critical shear stress of an infinitely long, simply supported, flat plate with identical, equally spaced, transverse stiffeners of zero torsional stiffness. Results are obtained by means of the Lagrangian multiplier method and are presented in the form of design charts. Experimental results are included and are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results."

Reinforced Circular Cutouts in Plane Sheets

Description: Note presenting an attempt to design the reinforcement of a cutout in a plane sheet in such a way that it is as nearly as possible equivalent to the part of the structure which has been cut out. A perfect equivalence would mean that the stresses and displacements of the structure remain the same as those which would have appeared without the cutout.

P Division monthly report, March 1949

Description: This progress report discusses activities at P Division for the month of March, 1949. All piles operated at 275 megawatts throughout the month except for the outages listed under Area Activities in this report. The average time operating efficiency''was 91.4%. A total of 47 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. During the month, 16.6 tons of alpha-rolled, triple-dipped metal were discharged without difficulty at a nominal concentration of 320 megawatts day (MWD) per ton.… more

A study of proposed semi-parallel and complete parallel operations of the Canyon and concentration Buildings, 200 Areas

Description: Due to a forecasted increase in pile area production as well as a possible decrease in batch size of the separations process, an increase in the capacities of the separations plants is indicated. It is the purpose of this report to review this relationship in the light of existing data and to determine how this additional capacity can best be attained through the use of either the proposed semiparallel or complete parallel methods of operation. Emphasis will necessarily be given to consideratio… more
