Apparatus to detect stable fractional charges on matter

Description: The construction of an apparatus designed to detect stable fractional charges on matter, if they exist, to the level of 10/sup -24/ per nucleon is reported and discussed. The charges on a stream of highly consistent droplets produced by the apparatus are determined by accurate measurement of the deflection of the droplets in falling through a static electric field. Maintenance of certain parameters of operation calculated to limit the random effects of electrical and aerodynamical disturbances … more

Composite weak bosons

Description: Dynamical mechanism of composite W and Z is studied in a 1/N field theory model with four-fermion interactions in which global weak SU(2) symmetry is broken explicitly by electromagnetic interaction. Issues involved in such a model are discussed in detail. Deviation from gauge coupling due to compositeness and higher order loop corrections are examined to show that this class of models are consistent not only theoretically but also experimentally.

Xi-Scaling

Description: A class of purely kinematical corrections to xi-scaling is exposed. These corrections are inevitably present in any realistic hadron model with spin and gauge invariance and lead to phenomenologically important M/sub hadron//sup 2//Q/sup 2/ corrections to Nachtmann moments.

The dipole picture in DIS: saturation and heavy quarks

Description: We discuss the description of the proton structure function within the dipole factorization framework. We parameterize the forward dipole amplitude to account for saturation as predicted by the small-x QCD evolution equations. Contrarily to previous models, the saturation scale does not decrease when taking heavy quarks into account. We show that the same dipole amplitude also allows to reproduce diffractive data and exclusive vector meson production.

Top quark pair production cross section at the Tevatron

Description: Top quark pair production cross section has been measured at the Tevatron by CDF and D0 collaborations using different channels and methods, in order to test standard model predictions, and to search for new physics hints affecting the t{bar t} production mechanism or decay. Measurements are carried out with an integrated luminosity of 1.0 to 2.0 fb{sup -1}, and are found to be consistent with standard model expectations.

Search for MSSM Higgs Boson Production in Proton Anti-Proton Collisions, with a Higgs Decaying into Taus

Description: We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons in association with bottom quarks in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The cross section for this process is enhanced in many extensions of the Standard Model (SM), such as in its Minimal Supersymmetric extension (MSSM) at large tan {beta}. The data, corresponding to a recorded integrated luminosity of 1 fb{sup -1}, were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. In the absence of a signal a 95% C.… more

Proceedings of RIKEN BNL Research Center Workshop entitled Hydrodynamics in Heavy Ion Collisions and QCD Equation of State (Volume 88)

Description: The interpretation of relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies with thermal concepts is largely based on the relative success of ideal (nondissipative) hydrodynamics. This approach can describe basic observables at RHIC, such as particle spectra and momentum anisotropies, fairly well. On the other hand, recent theoretical efforts indicate that dissipation can play a significant role. Ideally viscous hydrodynamic simulations would extract, if not only the equation of state, but also tr… more

Light-Front Holography and AdS/QCD Correspondence

Description: Light-Front Holography is a remarkable consequence of the correspondence between string theory in AdS space and conformal field theories in physical-space time. It allows string modes {Phi}(z) in the AdS fifth dimension to be precisely mapped to the light-front wavefunctions of hadrons in terms of a specific light-front impact variable {zeta} which measures the separation of the quark and gluonic constituents within the hadron. This mapping was originally obtained by matching the exact expressi… more

Study of b-baryons at D0 in Run II of the Tevatron

Description: The study of b-baryons is a unique opportunity at the Tevatron collider, which is the only running accelerator where these particles are expected to be produced. At the beginning of RunII of the Tevatron and after almost 30 years of the discovery of the b quark at Fermilab, the lack of statistics had restricted our knowledge on b-baryons to the observation of the lightest b-baryon, the {Lambda}{sub b}, and to its lifetime measured in decays which did not allow a fully reconstruction of this par… more

Evidence for electroweak top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 TeV

Description: We present the first evidence for electroweak single top quark production using nearly 1 fb{sup -1} of Tevatron Run II data at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. We select single-top-like data events in the lepton+jets decay channel and separate them from backgrounds using the matrix element analysis method. This technique uses leading order matrix elements to compute an event probability for both signal and background hypotheses. Using the expected signal acceptance, background, and observed data we measu… more

Top Quark Pair Production and Properties Measurements at the Tevatron

Description: The Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab with its center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV is currently the only source for the production of top quarks. This report reflects the current status of measurements of the top quark pair production cross section and properties performed by the CDF and D0 Collaborations. Utilizing datasets of up to two fb{sup -1}, these measurements allow unprecedented precision in probing the validity of the Standard Model.

Is the beta phase maximal?

Description: indicates that 2|Vub / Vcb/ Vus| = (1-z) with z given by z = 0.19 +(-) 0.14. This fact implies that irrespective of the form of the quark Yukawa matrices, the measured value of the SM CP phase beta is approximately the maximum allowed by the measured absolute values of the CKM elements. This is beta = pi/6 - z/sqrt{3} for gamma = pi/3 + z/sqrt{3}, which implies alpha = pi/2. Alternatively, assuming that beta is exactly maximal and using the experimental measurement, sin(2beta) = 0.726+(-) 0.037… more

Physics at. sqrt. (s) = 2TeV: An experimentalist's perspective

Description: This article is based on a series of 5 lectures delivered at the Mexican School. It is intended as an introduction to the physics expected at the Fermilab anti p p collider, the Tevatron, and as such relies heavily on its extrapolative power on physics done at lower energies at the CERN ISR and s anti p ps. The lectures were delivered to graduate students and, where possible, the author has attempted to give derivations of the basic formulae. The lectures deal with minimum bias physics, QCD jet… more

Diffractive dissociation and new quarks

Description: We argue that the chiral limit of QCD can be identified with the strong (diffractive dissociation) coupling limit of reggeon field theory. Critical Pomeron scaling at high energy must then be directly related to an infra-red fixed-point of massless QCD and so requires a large number of flavors. This gives a direct argument that the emergence of diffraction-peak scaling, KNO scaling etc. at anti p-p colliders are evidence of a substantial quark structure still to be discovered.

Vector current scattering in two dimensional quantum chromodynamics. [SU(N) group]

Description: The interaction of vector currents with hadrons is considered in a two dimensional SU(N) color gauge theory coupled to fermions in leading order in an N/sup -1/ expansion. After giving a detailed review of the model, various transition matrix elements of one and two vector currents between hadronic states were considered. A pattern is established whereby the low mass currents interact via meson dominance and the highly virtual currents interact via bare quark-current couplings. This pattern is … more

Resonance production in. gamma gamma. collisions

Description: The processes ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. hadrons can be depicted as follows. One photon creates a q anti q pair which starts to evolve; the other photon can either (A) make its own q anti q pair and the (q anti q q anti q) system continue to evolve or (B) interact with the quarks of the first pair and lead to a modified (q anti q) system in interaction with C = +1 quantum numbers. A review of the recent theoretical activity concerning resonance production and related problems is given under the fo… more
