The Cobalt Transformation

Description: The fcc hcp transformation in cobalt powder (equilibrium temperature = 417 C) was studied by x-ray methods and correlated with the density of stacking faults in both phases. Only the hcp phase is present in the cold-worked powder. The line broadening due to local strains and small particle sizes can be essentially removed by annealing at 300 C, leaving a residual broadening that permits a quantitative determination of the density of random growth and deformation faults. The latter are present i… more

On the Existences of a Magnetic and Focusing Length in a Synchrotron

Description: Measurements of S and s values indicate that existence of two different effective lengths in the azimuthal direction. We call them equivalent magnetic length and equivalent focusing length respectively. We demonstrate that the first one is the length to be used for the calculation of the radius and the second one in the calculation of the field gradient values. The formulas for the structure of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator are derived on this basis.

Measurement Of Average Neutron Energies For (o, n) Neutron Sources

Description: A method is presented for measuring the average energy of the neutrons from a source. The attenuation of the neutrons by polyethylene is measured by the use of a long counter in good geometry. The attenuation length is a sensitive function of the neutron energy. The average neutron energies from several (o, n) sources have been measured and agree well with values obtained by other techniques.

Determination of Tide-Displacement Curves for Vertical Safety Rods

Description: This thesis includes an analytical determination of the time displacement curves for air operated Vertical Safety Rods. Various Vertical Safety Rod design parameters such as accumulator volume, accumulator pressure, length of rod travel, rod weight, cylinder diameter, cylinder port location, cylinder port size, relief valve size and relief valve setting can be varied to get the desired time displacement curve. Results of experimental tests are included which verify the theoretical determination… more

An Evaluation of Buried Waste Line Design Practice Interim Report No. 2: Underground Pipeline and Structure Corrosion Study Program

Description: This report has been prepared to review the status of design for buried waste line and presents the major factors involved in support of the conclusions. This report is the second in a series reporting on the general subject of underground corrosion. The first on cathodic protection of waste lines noted the technology of stainless steel and its effect on existing waste line and recommended continued use of the cathodic protection. Experience with buried stainless pipe had shown that, unless pro… more

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1953

Description: "Continued progress has been made with the high temperature decontamination processes for irradiated uranium fuel. The fused salt treatment of molten uranium has been extended to UCl3. Plutonium and rare earths were extracted into the UCl3 phase. Direct plutonium distillation from molten irradiated uranium has been scaled up to the hundred gram scale. Solid scavenging experiments using uranium oxide, uranium carbide, and uranium nitride in contact with molten uranium have indicated fission p… more

Preparation of a Thorium Slurry

Description: "A study has been made of methods to prepare a fluid containing 1 gram of thorium per milliliter. The methods considered were solutions of thorium salts, suspensions of dry solids in water, and collodial suspensions. Thorium oxide, oxalate, and fluoride were tried in conjunction with one or more surface actants, but it was not possible to attain the required thorium concentration. Thorium hydrosol, produced by peptization of thorium hydroxide and subsequent electrodialysis, gave the necessary… more

Analysis of the Moon's Surface by Nuclear Reactions

Description: Introduction. With the imminence of non-destructive landings of small instrumented payloads on the moon, many suggestions are being put forth as to methods of analyzing its surface. It is the purpose of this report to present a body of information which, it is hoped, will be useful in examining the feasibility of an early nuclear experiment to determine the elemental constituents of the lunar surface. The reasons for considering a nuclear approach is that it may be possible to perform an analys… more

Transition Boiling Heat Transfer Program; Fifth Quarterly Progress Report, January - March 1964

Description: Summary: Tests with the two-rod assembly were performed with liquid film trippers attached to the unheated wall, and a variation in rod spacing. Experimental data and improved high-speed motion pictures have been obtained of transition boiling behavior. The changes of the local heat transfer process between nucleate and film boiling can be readily distinguished i the motion pictures. Observational test performed with very short fins on the heated surface resulted in essentially eliminating … more
