Regenerative Process for Desulfurization of High Temperature Combustion and Fuel Gases. Progress Report No. 15, January 1-March 31, 1980

Description: A new regenerative sorbent process for desulfurizing fluidized-bed combustion gases is presented. The sorbent was developed by Brookhaven National Laboratory and is prepared from commercial silicate bearing portland cement. The chemical reactions and mechanical procedures involved in preparing the sorbent, in desulfurizing the flue gas, in regenerating the spent sorbent, and in producing elemental sulfur from the regenerator product gas are discussed. The performance of natural limestone sorben… more

Geophysical Logging Case History of the Raft River Geothermal System, Idaho

Description: Drilling to evaluate the geothermal resource in the Raft River Valley began in 1974 and resulted in the discovery of a geothermal reservoir at a depth of approximately 1523 m (500 ft). Several organizations and companies have been involved in the geophysical logging program. There is no comprehensive report on the geophysical logging, nor has there been a complete interpretation. The objectives of this study are to make an integrated interpretation of the available data and compile a case histo… more

Coastal-inland solar radiation difference study. Final report

Description: The purpose of this study was to quantify the characteristics of solar insolation in the coastal zone and to determine the effect of the sea breeze circulation on the global insolation. In order to satisfy these objectives, a six station sampling network was established in the coastal plain of southeastern North Carolina, where previous evidence has indicated that the sea breeze circulation is almost a daily occurrence from late May through October. Three sites (Sloop Point, Onslow Beach, and C… more

High-temperature vitrification of Hanford residual-liquid waste in a continuous melter

Description: Over 270 kg of high-temperature borosilicate glass have been produced in a series of three short-term tests in the High-Temperature Ceramic Melter vitrification system at PNL. The glass produced was formulated to vitrify simulated Hanford residual-liquid waste. The tests were designed to (1) demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing high-temperature, continuous-vitrification technology for the immobilization of the residual-liquid waste, (2) test the airlift draining technique utilized by the hi… more

Bending stress and frequency calculations for the bearing-pack shaft

Description: The bearing-pack shaft investigation was conducted to analyze bending and cycle fatigue stresses and resonance. The bending stresses produced were considered to be minimal, and the cycle fatigue stress was less than the material's endurance level. Resonating frequencies were estimated to be sufficiently high to preclude problems.

Analysis of the need for intermediate and peaking technologies in the year 2000

Description: This analysis was conducted to assess the impact of load management on the future need for intermediate- and peak-generating technologies (IPTs) such as combustion turbines, pumped storage, and cycling coal plants. There will be a reduced need for IPTs if load-management activities such as time-of-use pricing, together with customer-owned energy-storage devices, hot-water-heater controls, and interruptible service, can economically remove most of the variation from electric-power demands. There… more

Evaluation of potential geopressure geothermal test sites in southern Louisiana

Description: Six geopressured-geothermal prospects in southern Louisiana were studied in detail to assess their potential use as test sites for the production of geopressure-geothermal energy. Each of the six sites contains substantial quantities of energy. Three of these prospects, Grand Lake, Lake Theriot, and Bayou Hebert, appear to be suitable for a test site. A summary of the findings is presented.

Modified titrimetric determination of plutonium using photometric end-point detection

Description: A method used at LASL for the accurate and precise assay of plutonium metal was modified for the measurement of plutonium in plutonium oxides, nitrate solutions, and in other samples containing large quantities of plutonium in oxidized states higher than +3. In this modified method, the plutonium oxide or other sample is dissolved using the sealed-reflux dissolution method or other appropriate methods. Weighed aliquots, containing approximately 100 mg of plutonium, of the dissolved sample or pl… more

Effect of circumsolar radiation on performance of focusing collectors

Description: Circumsolar radiation is one of several factors, along with optical errors (contour, tracking, etc.), that determine the size and shape of the solar image at the receiver of a concentrating collector. The sensitivity of a collector to circumsolar radiation depends on insolation conditions and on collector parameters; it increases with geometrical concentration ratio and decreases with operating threshold. The Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) circumsolar data are used to develop fast computati… more

Optical analysis of point focus parabolic radiation concentrators

Description: A simple formalism is developed for analyzing the optical performance of point focus parabolic radiation concentrators. To account for off-axis aberrations of the parabola, an angular acceptance function is defined as that fraction of a beam of parallel radiation incident on the aperture which would reach the receiver if the optics were perfect. The radiation intercepted by the receiver of a real concentrator is obtained as a convolution of angular acceptance function, of optical error distribu… more

User's guide to the Heffter Interactive-Terminal Transport Model (ARL-HITTM)

Description: The transport section of the Air Resources Laboratories (ARL) Atmospheric Transport and Dispersion Model (ATAD, Heffter, 1980) has been revised and simplified for use on interactive computer terminals. The resulting model, called the Heffter Interactive-Terminal Transport Model (ARL-HITTM) calculates four trajectories per day from one origin, forward or backward in time, using observed rawinsonde and pibal data for North America as input to the model. Trajectories, of three days duration, are b… more

SCRAM: a fast computational model for the optical performance of point fucus solar central receiver systems

Description: Because of the complexities of heliostat shadowing and blocking calculations, computational models for the optical performance of point focus central receiver (PFCR) systems tend to be too slow for many important applications, such as optimization studies based on performance with realistic weather data. In this paper, a mathematical approximation procedure, designated Sandia Central Receiver Approximation Model (SCRAM) will be described. Rather than simulating the system components from first … more

Evaluation of two-beam spectroscopy as a plasma diagnostic

Description: A two-beam spectroscopy (TBS) system is evaluated theoretically and experimentally. This new spectroscopic technique uses correlations between components of emitted light separated by a small difference in angle of propagation. It is thus a non-perturbing plasma diagnostic which is shown to provide local (as opposed to line-of-sight averaged) information about fluctuations in the density of light sources within a plasma - information not obtainable by the usual spectroscopic methods. The presen… more

The vector current coupling is determined by measuring the tau ..-->.. rho ..nu../sub tau/ branching ratio. The axial-vector coupling is determined by measuring the tau ..-->.. ..pi.. ..nu../sub tau/ branching ratio. The Cabibbo structure of the hadronic current is established by observing the decay tau ..-->.. K*(890)..nu../sub tau/ and measuring its branching ratio. The br… more

POTENTIAL MARKETS FOR HIGH-BTU GAS FROM COAL

Description: It has become increasilngly clear that the energy-related ilemna facing this nation is both a long-term and deepening problem. A widespread recognition of the critical nature of our energy balance, or imbalance, evolved from the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973. The seeds of this crisis were sown in the prior decade, however, as our consumption of known energy reserves outpaced our developing of new reserves. The resultant increasing dependence on foreign energy supplies hs triggered serious fuel short… more
