Tumor production in Syrian hamsters following inhalation of PuO/sub 2/--ZrO/sub 2/ aerosol

Description: Syrian golden hamsters of both sexes were exposed to aerosols of ZrO/sub 2/ containing PuO/sub 2/. The starting material in the aerosol generator also had a small amount of /sup 57/Co added as a tracer. The mixture of all three constituents was nebulized and the droplets passed through a heating column at 1000/sup 0/C. Aerosol sampling was accomplished with a cascade impactor and electrostatic precipitator. The median aerodynamic diameters in all inhalation runs were approximately 2 ..mu..m wit… more

Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. Clonal theory of radiation carcinogenesis

Description: In some cases, usually involving high-LET radiations, the dose response at low doses follows a power function of dose with exponent less than one over a wide dose range. This type of response is of great interest since (a) it implies greater effect per unit dose at progressively smaller doses, and (b) it is not predicted by most models and theories of radiobiology. A theoretical framework is presented for responses having the above characteristics over a dose range extending over a factor of 10… more

Radiation-induced segregation in HT-9 martensitic steel

Description: Miniature notched-bar specimens of normalized and tempered HT-9 were neutron irradiated to approx.13 dpa and broken at liquid nitrogen temperatures in a UHV chamber. Fracture surfaces were analyzed using scanning Auger electron spectroscopy. Following irradiation at 410/sup 0/C, the fracture surface contained a small number of large relatively smooth facets, which are thought to be prior austenite grain boundaries. Strong segregation of Ni, Cr, Si, and P was detected at these surfaces, the rema… more

Cesium-137 source material for an irradiator

Description: The feasibility of using /sup 137/Cs for the gamma source in sludge irradiators is discussed. It was concluded that /sup 137/Cs, because of its availability in large quantities as a by-product of fission in nuclear reactors, is an excellent candidate source for use in sewage sludge irradiators. The capsules used to store /sup 137/CsCl in the Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility embody the technology gained by extensive development and experience during the past 25 years. The WESF capsule pr… more

TRITOX: a multiple parameter evaluation of tritium toxicity

Description: The increased use of nuclear reactors for power generation will lead to the introduction of tritium into the environment. The need for assessing possible immediate and long-term effects of exposure to this tritium led to the development of a broad program directed towards evaluating the possible somatic and genetic effects of continuous exposure to tritiated water (HTO). Among the parameters measured are the genetic, cytogenetic, reproductive efficiency, growth, nonspecific lifetime shortening,… more

Critical Studies of a Fast Reactor Core Containing Depleted Uranium and Sodium as Diluents. (ZPR-III Assembly 36)

Description: Critical studies were performed with a metallic, fast reactor core designed to snvestigate the effects of replacing highly absorbing U/sup 238/ diluent with high-scattering, lowabsorbing sodium diluent. The fuel was 15.7 wt% enriched U/sup 235/ and the core contained 18.2 vol% sodium and 12.68 vol% stainless steel. The experimental program was designed to measure the effect of the material replacement on spectral indices, which consisted of the standard fission ratios, foil irradiations, and a … more

Edge-on ion irradiation of electron microscope specimens

Description: A special technique is described for in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) experiments involving simultaneous ion irradiation, in which the resultant phenomena are observed as in a cross-section TEM specimen. That is, instead of ion-irradiating the film or foil specimen normal to the major surfaces and observing in plan view (i.e., in the same direction), the specimen is irradiated edge-on (i.e., parallel to the major surfaces) and is observed normal to the depth direction with respect… more

Atomic structure of clusters through chemical reactions

Description: Techniques for the probing of isolated metal cluster structure through adsorbate binding patterns will be described. The saturation of clusters with reagents such as ammonia and nitrogen provides information on the number of preferred binding sites for these reagents. The dependence of this number on cluster size can suggest particular structural themes. The equilibrium reaction with water can be used to identify cluster sizes having especially enhanced binding for the water molecule. Again, th… more

Preparation of curium-americium oxide microspheres by resin-bead loading

Description: Resin-bead loading and calcination techniques have been used to produce all curium and americium oxide feed material (about 2.2 kg) for HFIR targets since 1971. The process based on Dowex 50W resin has progressed from a series of test runs, through special production runs, into routine production in permanent equipment beginning in 1975. Key attributes of this process are its reliability, high yields, and ease of operation. The process is suited for remote operation in hot cells. Yields approac… more

Uncertainty in the power distribution for a fast reactor burnup cycle

Description: Demonstration that advanced reactor designs satisfy safety and performance goals requires the analysis of uncertainties in calculated reactor characteristics. Two of the important performance characteristics of advanced liquid metal reactors (LMR) are the burnup reactivity swing and the local power peaking factor. Previous work reported a study of the uncertainty in the burnup reactivity swing attributable to nuclear data uncertainties for a typical advanced LMR design. The results are reported… more
