Crystal-Field Spectroscopy of UCL4 by Neutron Inelastic Scattering

Description: The crystal-field level scheme of uranium tetrachloride has been the subject of a number of investigations by both optical and magnetic measurements. Agreement does not exist. To attempt to resolve this problem we have performed experiments with the pulsed neutron source at ANL which allows electronic spectroscopy to be extended to approx.2000 cm/sup -1/. Initially using incident energies of 400 cm/sup -1/ we examined the GAMMA/sub 4/ (ground state) to GAMMA/sub 5/ (excited state) level with th… more

Cyclic voltammetric study of the reduction of U(III) to uranium metal in molten LiCl-NaCl-CaCl/sub 2/-BaCl/sub 2/-UCl/sub 3/

Description: Cyclic voltammetry was used to investigate the electrochemistry of the reduction of UCl/sub 3/ to uranium metal in molten LiCl-NaCl-CaCl/sub 2/-BaCl/sub 2/ (49.7-8.0-26.5-15.8 mol %) containing dissolved UCl/sub 3/. The purpose of the study was to obtain information on the kinetics of the reaction, which will be used in the design of electrorefining equipment for the reprocessing of core and blanket fuel discharged from the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR). The electrorefining operation employs the … more

Resonance Raman spectra of metal halide vapor complexes

Description: Resonance Raman spectra of complex vapor phase compounds formed by reacting ''acidic'' gases (A/sub 2/X/sub 6/ = Al/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/, Al/sub 2/Br/sub 6/, In/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/) with metal halides have been measured. Spectra obtained from equilibrium vapor mixtures of A/sub 2/X/sub 6/ over solid MX/sub 2/ (= PdCl/sub 2/, PdBr/sub 2/, CuCl/sub 2/, CoBr/sub 2/, TiCl/sub 2/, FeCl/sub 2/, NiCl/sub 2/, PtCl/sub 2/) were a superposition of the A/sub 2/X/sub 6/-AX/sub 3/ bands and in few cases of new reson… more

Recovery of UO{sub 2}/PuO{sub 2} in IFR electrorefining process

Description: This invention is comprised of a process for converting PuO{sub 2} and U0{sub 2} present in an electrorefiner to the chlorides, by contacting the PuO{sub 2} and U0{sub 2} with Li metal in the presence of an alkali metal chloride salt substantially free of rare earth and actinide chlorides for a time and at a temperature sufficient to convert the U0{sub 2} and PuO{sub 2} to metals while converting Li metal to Li{sub 2}O. Li{sub 2}O is removed either by reducing with rare earth metals or by provi… more

Plutonium recovery from spent reactor fuel by uranium displacement

Description: This report discusses a process for separating uranium values and transuranic values from fission products containing rare earth values when the values which are contained together in a molten chloride salt electrolyte. A molten chloride salt electrolyte with a first ratio of plutonium chloride to uranium chloride is contacted with both a solid cathode and an anode having values of uranium and fission products including plutonium. A voltage is applied across the anode and cathode electrolytical… more

Microwave Combustion and Sintering Without Isostatic Pressure

Description: In recent years interest has grown rapidly in the application of microwave energy to the processing of ceramics, composites, polymers, and other materials. Advances in the understanding of microwave/materials interactions will facilitate the production of new ceramic materials with superior mechanical properties. One application of particular interest is the use of microwave energy for the mobilization of uranium for subsequent redeposition. Phase III (FY98) will focus on the microwave assisted… more
