VISAR: interferometer quadrature signal recording by electronic streak camera

Description: This short paper describes a demonstration to record the four quadrature signals from a push-pull VISAR velocity interferometer using an electronic streak camera. Optical fibers were used to transmit the interferometer outputs to the camera photocathode. Brightness variations of these signals were recorded on film during the experiment. Velocity information was later recovered from this record to give a continuous velocity history. Anticipated advantages over previous methods are increased time… more

Programmable data acquisition system for microwave calibration

Description: A fully automated, programmable data acquisition system has been developed to record by printout or on punched paper tape the data for microwave power calibration. The system programs, controls, and receives BCD, analog, and ASCII information from external instrumentation. Construction, requirements, and operation of the system are described, and wiring diagrams are included.

One gigasample per second transient recorder: a performance demonstration

Description: The performance demonstrated by a one gigasample per second (1 Gs/s) transient recorder currently in advanced development portends an important new instrument for recording single transient data. A Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) is used to sample a continuous analog signal. Samples acquired at the full sampling rate (1 Gs/s) are temporarily stored in the CCD, then read out at a slow rate (e.g., 250 Ks/s) into a conventional analog-to-digital converter prior to storage in nonvolatile, digital memor… more

Recover it yourself with user logging

Description: IMAGE logging is a good product that has proved to be an effective and accurate way to save interactive transactions for recovery and audit purposes. There is one shortcoming with the product in that it only logs transactions within the IMAGE domain. Some applications require that KSAM and MPE files be updated in an on-line system. How can these files be recovered. One answer is to use a recoverable program structure that not only posts the interactive transactions, but recovers them as well. T… more

On the measurement of wind speeds in tornadoes with a portable CW/FM-CW Doppler radar

Description: Both the formation mechanism and structure of tornadoes are not yet well understood. The Doppler radar is probably the best remote-sensing instrument at present for determining the wind field in tornadoes. Although much has been learned about the non-supercell tornado from relatively close range using Doppler radars at fixed sites, close-range measurements in supercell tornadoes are relatively few. Doppler radar can increase significantly the number of high-resolution, sub-cloud base measuremen… more

VISAR: some things you should know. [Velocity interferometer system for any reflector]

Description: VISAR performance can be improved while reducing cost, set up time, and required operator skill. Simple features that increase laser light efficiency, improve signal-to-noise ratio, reduce the number of data channels, greatly simplify data reduction, ease VISAR adjustments, and reduce laser wear and tear are discussed. These features were collected, developed, tried, and proven over the last few years and several hundred VISAR shots.

Preliminary Catalog of Earthquakes in Northern Imperial Valley, California, April--June 1977

Description: Seismic monitoring of the northern section of the Imperial Valley region in southern California has been underway since 1973. A description of the 22-station network and a list of preliminary data on earthquakes recorded by the network from April 1977 through June 1977 are presented. (JGB)

The Role of Microstructural Phenomena in Magnetic Thin Films

Description: The subject is germane to magnetic recording media. Results during the first 2 years are presented under the following headings: atomic resolution TEM of CoNiCr films; CoNiCr and CoCrTa thin films; development of texture; and CoSm/Cr thin films. The HREM results showed that defects in Co-based films may be responsible for higher coercivity. Findings are presented on the effects of Cr interlayers on the microstructure of the second Co-based film in Co/Cr/Co/Cr multilayer films. Proposed research… more

Infrasonic observations of large scale HE events

Description: The Los Alamos Infrasound Program has been operating since about mid-1982, making routine measurements of low frequency atmospheric acoustic propagation. Generally, we work between 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz; however, much of our work is concerned with the narrower range of 0.5 to 5.0 Hz. Two permanent stations, St. George, UT, and Los Alamos, NM, have been operational since 1983, collecting data 24 hours a day. This discussion will concentrate on measurements of large, high explosive (HE) events at range… more

Fast event recorder utilizing a CCD analog shift register

Description: A system of electronics has been developed to allow the capture and recording of relatively fast, low-amplitude analog events. The heart of the system is a dual 455-cell analog shift register charge-coupled device, Fairchild CCD321ADC-3. The CCD is operated in a dual clock mode. The input is sampled at a selectable clock rate of .25-20 MHz. The stored analog data is then clocked out at a slower rate, typically about .25 MHz. The time base expansion of the analog data allows for analog-to-digita… more

Utilization of optical image data from the Advanced Test Accelerator (ATA)

Description: Extensive use is made of optical diagnostics to obtain information on the 50-MeV, 10-kA, 70-ns pulsed-electron beam produced by the Advanced Test Accelerator (ATA). Light is generated by the beam striking a foil inserted in the beamline or through excitation of the gas when the beamline is filled with air. The emitted light is collected and digitized. Two-dimensional images are recorded by either a gated framing camera or a streak camera. Extraction of relevant beam parameters, such as current … more

Remote two-wire data entry method and device

Description: This invention is comprised of a device for detecting switch closure such as in a keypad for entering data comprising a matrix of conductor pairs and switches, each pair of conductors shorted by the pressing of a particular switch, and current-regulating devices on each conductor for limiting current in one direction and passing it without limit in the other direction. The device is driven by alternating current. The ends of the conductors in a conductor pair limit current of opposing polaritie… more

A High-Speed Readout for Multi-Channel Pulse-Height Analyzers

Description: From American Nuclear Society Meeting, New York, Nov. 1963. In computer-coupled automated activation analysis such as in the Mark II system, conventional methods of data readout impose a serious restriction on the minimum handling time per sample. A data coupler for operating between the data accumulation system and the computer tape unit was developed which contributes nothing to the handling time per sample, does not distort the data, and prepares the data for direct computer entry. In additi… more

Particle velocity measurements of the reaction zone in nitromethane

Description: The detonation reaction-zone length in neat, deuterated, and chemically sensitized nitromethane (NM) has been measured by using several different laser-based velocity interferometry systems. The experiments involved measuring the particle velocity history at a NM/PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) window interface during the time a detonation in the NM interacted with the interface. Initially, Fabry-Perot interferometry was used, but, because of low time resolution (>5 ns), several different conf… more

Prototype Gages to Measure Plate Spacing in Flat Fuel-Plate Subassemblies

Description: The feasibillty of two types of gages for measuring the plate separation in flat fuel-plate subassemblies was investigated with experimental model gages. One gage is based on a four-arm strain-gage bridge mounted on a flexible beryllium-copper beam. The deflection of the sensing beam as the gage traverses the channel is continuously reconded by a strsin-gage analyzer. The second gage is a liquid-filled system consisting of a small flat plunger-and-cylinder arrangement. A rubber diaphragrn betwe… more
