Multigroup processing ENDF/B dosimetry covariances

Description: The methodology of multigroup processing of ENDF/B dosimetry covariance (uncertainty) information is discussed, with specific references to the ERRORR covariance module of the NJOY nuclear data processing system. Also discussed is the recent application of ERRORR to the generation of a 137-group, 35-material covariance library for dosimetry applications, and a compact format for storing and transmitting fine-group covariance libraries is introduced.

Nuclear data for MCNP

Description: Sources of neutron and photon transport data are described as well as the processing of the evaluated data sets into continuous-energy and multigroup cross-section sets. The procedures for checking and validating the processed data are discussed. The question of why so many data sets are available is addressed by indicating the differences between data sets as well as their relative strengths and weaknesses. Suggestions are made to help the MCNP user in selecting appropriate cross-section sets.… more

Multi-faceted energy-conservation program. Final technical report

Description: The purpose of this project was to design and build 19 solar thermosiphoning air panels, insulate walls, generally tighten up the library building, and install other energy conserving devices. Another purpose of the project was to serve as a model to other libraries in Kentucky, to commercial buildings in this area, and to homeowners in the area. After much discussion with architects and among ourselves, we chose a type of solar installation that would be visible to the public and easily replic… more

Evaluated nuclear data file ENDF/B-VI

Description: For the past 25 years, the United States Department of Energy has sponsored a cooperative program among its laboratories, contractors and university research programs to produce an evaluated nuclear data library which would be application independent and universally accepted. The product of this cooperative activity is the ENDF/B evaluated nuclear data file. After approximately eight years of development, a new version of the data file, ENDF/B-VI has been released. The essential features of thi… more

Solar-energy workshops held at Miami-Dade Public Libraries, 1981-1982. Final report

Description: Over a two year period, the Miami-Dade Public Library System gave 12 free solar energy programs throughout Dade County in its various branches; Solar Water Heater Workshops, where registered participants actually took part in building or putting together a solar water heater. Kick-off programs were also given free-of-charge by a number of local solar companies, to inform the audience about solar energy in general and the solar workshops in particular. Average registered attendance at these work… more

After ten years of metafiles: Where does the Computer Graphics Metafile fit

Description: This paper discusses the need at Los Alamos National Laboratory for the Computer Graphics Metafile standard and supporting software. A brief history of metafile usage at Los Alamos is given. This is followed by an overview of our computing environment and a description of our computer graphics system. Issues we face in making the transition from our metafile to a system supporting the Computer Graphics Metafile and related graphics standards is then discussed. Our present graphics software was … more

Status of multigroup cross-section data for shielding applications

Description: Multigroup cross-section libraries for shielding applications in formats for direct use in discrete ordinates or Monte Carlo codes have long been a part of the Data Library Collection (DLC) of the Radiation Shielding Information Center (RSIC). In recent years libraries in more flexible and comprehensive formats, which allow the user to derive his own problem-dependent sets, have been added to the collection. The current status of both types is described, as well as projections for adding data l… more

Generation of broad-group neutron/photon cross-section libraries for shielding applications

Description: The generation and use of multigroup cross-section libraries with broad energy group structures is primarily for the economy of computer resources. Also, the establishment of reference broad-group libraries is desirable in order to avoid duplication of effort, both in terms of the data generation and verification, and to assure a common data base for all participants in a specific project. Uncertainties are inevitably introduced into the broad-group cross sections due to approximations in the g… more

The human telomere

Description: An ultimate goal of human genetics is the generation of a complete physical and ''functional'' map of the human genome. Twenty-five percent of human DNA, however, consists of repetitive DNA sequences. These repetitive DNA sequences are thought to arise by many mechanisms, from direct sequence amplification by the unequal recombination of homologous DNA regions to the reverse flow of genetic information. A general outline of the chromosomal organization of these repetitive sequences will be disc… more

In the area of multigroup cross section preparation this work entails the testing of ENDE/B-IV based and other cross-section libraries in the SCALE system, the development of improved cross-section processing methods for the AMPX system, and the generation of an ENDF/B-V based library. In the area of systems analysis this w… more

The evaluation and application of redundant-cross-section covariances

Description: Certain multigroup covariance libraries, notably COVFILS-2, omit all redundant (or summed) reactions on the grounds that the information content of a well-measured total cross section, for example, is implicitly contained in the covariances of the component, or partial, reactions that add up to the total. It is shown that, while redundant reactions can play an important role in cross-section and covariance evaluation, their emission from libraries intended for applications is justifiable. 3 ref… more

The National Laboratory Gene Library Project

Description: The two National Laboratories at Livermore and Los Alamos have played a prominent role in the development and application of flow cytometry and sorting to chromosome classification and purification. Both laboratories began to receive numerous requests for specific human chromosomal types purified by flow sorting for gene library construction, but these requests were difficult to satisfy due to time and personnel constraints. The Department of Energy, through its Office of Health and Environment… more

ENSL82 and CDRL82: the 1982 version of evaluated nuclear structure libraries ENSL and CDRL

Description: Since the issuance of UCRL 50400 Vol. 23, ENSL and CDRL: Evaluated Nuclear Structure Libraries, errors have been noted in half-lives. Most of these errors were for half-lives represented in exponential form, where the exponent is positive. This situation occurs only when the unit for half-life is years. A few errors were associated with ground states having unknown half-lives. These were incorrectly labeled as stable (i.e., a value of 1.0 E + 50 s was entered). Such ground states are assigned h… more
