Theory and tests of two-phase turbines

Description: Two-phase turbines open the possibility of new types of power cycles operating with extremely wet mixtures of steam and water, organic fluids, or immiscible liquids and gases. Possible applications are geothermal power, waste-heat recovery, refrigerant expansion, solar conversion, transportation turbine engines, and engine bottoming cycles. A theoretical model for two-phase impulse turbines was developed. Apparatus was constructed for testing one- and two-stage turbines (using speed decrease fr… more

Brine chemistry: scaling and corrosion. Geothermal research study in the Salton Sea region of California

Description: The purpose of this report is to recommend a reasonable program of brine chemistry research that will result in the development of methods for predicting and controlling scale deposition, and in guidelines for the selection of corrosion-resistant construction materials. First, background information, which is necessary for the understanding of the problems of scaling and corrosion in the Salton Sea KGRA, is presented through a review of the history of geothermal exploration and development in t… more

Development of Bypassed Oil Reserves Using Behind Casing Resistivity Measurements

Description: Tubing and rods of the S.P. Pedro-Nepple No.1 well were pulled and the well was prepared for running of Schlumberger's Cased Hole Formation Resistivity Tool (CHFR) in selected intervals. The CHFR tool was successfully run and data was captured. The CHFR formation resistivity readings were compared to original open hole resistivity measurements. Separation between the original and CHFR resistivity curves indicate both swept and un-swept sand intervals. Both watered out sand intervals and those w… more

Marysville Lake Hydrothermal Study: Report 2

Description: Partial abstract: "This study was conducted to determine the effect that the proposed Marysville Lake pump-storage hydropower (2250-mw power plant) project would have on downstream water temperatures. A one-dimensional numerical model was used for simulation and prediction of temperatures within and downstream of Marysville Lake. Two physical hydraulic models were used for study and description of the hydrodynamic response of the project. Information from the physical models was necessary to de… more

Mission Bay Harbor, California, Design for Wave and Surge Protection and Flood Control: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore b… more
