Description: Abstract: The erroneously high values for uranium content of salvage solutions as determined by the ether extraction-ascorbic acid procedure have been demonstrated to be due to the presence of colored organic materials in these solutions. Laboratory Development of the Thorex Process

Description: Changes made in the Thorex process flowsheet were a decrease in the extraction column acidity to decrease thorium losses and the addition of a second thorium solvent-extraction cycle to provide the increased decontamination required when thorium irradiated to 2000-4000 g of U233 per ton is processed. Bonded slugs could not be dissolved by the Thorex flowsheet procedure. Various laboratory scale studies on feed preparation, first-cycle variables, and radiation damage to the solvent are reported.

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report

Description: Measurement of radioactive carry-over was made on borax III operating at 300 psig and at power levels ranging from 4 to 14 mv. Decontamination factors of from 1.5 x 104 (at 14 mv) were obtained. These data are in essential agreement with those predicted by previous laboratory experimental work.

A New Method for Preparing Hydroxide-Free Alkali Chloride Melts

Description: Molten salts have been used extensively as solvents for electrochemical processes. The difficulty of removing the last traces of residual moisture from the salts has often necessitated rather arduous drying procedures. If the moisture is not removed, hydrolysis occurs upon fusion.
