Sampled data spectroscopy (SDS): A new technology for radiation instrumentation

Description: A new instrumentation architecture for radiation spectroscopy is in the early stages of development at Savannah River. Based upon the same digital sampling techniques used in sonar and radar, sampled data spectroscopy (SDS) has produced Na(I)/PMT spectra with resolution comparable to conventional PHA systems. This work has laid the foundation for extending SDS techniques to solid state detector applications as well. Two-dimensional SDS processes raw, unintegrated detector output pulses to produ… more

King County Nearshore Habitat Mapping Data Report: Picnic Point to Shilshole Bay Marina

Description: The objective of this study is to provide accurate, georeferenced maps of benthic habitats to assist in the siting of a new wastewater treatment plant outfall and the assessment of habitats of endangered, threatened, and economically important species. The mapping was conducted in the fall of 1999 using two complementary techniques: side-scan sonar and underwater videography. Products derived from these techniques include geographic information system (GIS) compatible polygon data of substrate … more

[Repair of a cable as it relates to the North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory]

Description: The ultimate limits of long-range sonar are imposed by ocean variability and the ambient sound field. Scattering from internal waves limits the temporal and spatial coherence of the received signal. Low frequency noise is dominated by shipping and ultimately, by wave-breaking processes. The resulting granularity of the noise field can be exploited for detection and localization purposes. The ultimate objective is to understand the fundamental limits to signal processing imposed by these ocean p… more
