DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report, October 1-December 31, 1961

Description: Continued effort is reported on preparation and characterization of PuO/ sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/-- PuO/sub 2/ mixtures. Sintering and characterization of pellets for irradiation tests was emphasized, and efforts were also devoted to plasma torch production of spherical PuO /sub 2/ and coating of oxide materials. PuO/sub 2/ produced by the oxalate process from low concentration feed contains agglomerates which are not readily broken down, while that produced from normal feed contains larger agglome… more

DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report for Period January 1 through March 31, 1962

Description: During this reporting period, particular effort was of aced on powder blending and pellet sintering studies prior to irradiation sample fabrication, and, subsequently, the production and characterization of the pellets slated for irradiation. Also, PuO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/-PuO/sub 2/ characterization studies were continued, and new techniques are being developed. DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report for period July 1 through September 30, 1961

Description: Data are tabulated for the characteristic parameters of PuO/sub 2/ powders prepared by the continuous oxalate precipitation process. The results show that the PuO/sub 2/ surface area decreases almost linearly with calcination hold times at 760 deg C. A thermogravimetric study of the decomposition of Pu oxalate indicate the formation of an initial stable compound at ~ l00 deg C and a stable intermediate at ~ 300 deg C. Characteristic data are tabulated for UO/sub 2/ -5% PuO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/-… more

JBK-75 microstructure specification recommendation. [Modified A-286]

Description: Since the ASTM-E-45 standard for microcleanliness is not applicable to superalloys like JBK-75 stainless steel (Modified A-286), Rocky Flats should adopt the Ladish microcleanliness standard (APML Cleanliness Classification of High Temperature Alloys Chart, 1971), as a guide for setting material acceptance specifications for JBK-75. Inclusion ratings of S-2, N-2, C-2, and M-2 should be acceptable. The microstructure should have a grain size of 5 or finer, but not smaller than 9, and microsegreg… more

A preliminary design study to define the configuration and performance of the Surveyor generator is completed. Dispersion patterns are found for radioactive materials released by the high-velocity vertical impact of Surveyor-type generators on the moon. High- velocity testing methods are discussed. Flare and telemetry capsules, designed to simulate fuel cores of nuclear … more

Development of the LICADO coal cleaning process

Description: Development of the liquid carbon dioxide process for the cleaning of coal was performed in batch, variable volume (semi-continuous), and continuous tests. Continuous operation at feed rates up to 4.5 kg/hr (10-lb/hr) was achieved with the Continuous System. Coals tested included Upper Freeport, Pittsburgh, Illinois No. 6, and Middle Kittanning seams. Results showed that the ash and pyrite rejections agreed closely with washability data for each coal at the particle size tested (-200 mesh). A 0.… more

Experimental and theoretical studies of particle generation afterlaser ablation of copper with background gas at atmosphericpressure

Description: Laser ablation has proven to be an effective method for generating nanoparticles; particles are produced in the laser induced vapor plume during the cooling stage. To understand the in-situ condensation process, a series of time resolved light scattering images were recorded and analyzed. Significant changes in the condensation rate and the shape of the condensed aerosol plume were observed in two background gases, helium and argon. The primary particle shape and size distribution were measured… more

Final Report for Fractionation and Separation of Polydisperse Nanoparticles into Distinct Monodisperse Fractions Using CO2 Expanded Liquids

Description: The overall objective of this project was to facilitate efficient fractionation and separation of polydisperse metal nanoparticle populations into distinct monodisperse fractions using the tunable solvent properties of gas expanded liquids. Specifically, the dispersibility of ligand-stabilized nanoparticles in an organic solution was controlled by altering the ligand-solvent interaction (solvation) by the addition of carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}) gas as an antisolvent (thereby tailoring the bulk s… more

Numerical Simulation of Interaction of Hypervelocity Particle Stream with a Target

Description: We present results of direct numerical simulations of impact of hypervelocity particle stream with a target. The stream of interest consists of submillimeter (30-300 micron) brittle ceramic particles. Current supercomputer capabilities make it possible to simulate a realistic size of streams (up to 20 mm in diameter and 500 mm in length) while resolving each particle individually. Such simulations make possible to study the damage of the target from synergistic effects of individual impacts. In… more

Characterization of the solid, airborne materials created by the interaction of UF/sub 6/ with atmospheric moisture in a contained volume

Description: Several experiments have been performed in which UF/sub 6/ was released into air under static conditions in a 6 m/sup 3/ release chamber in order to characterize the solid products of hydrolysis as the amount of UF/sub 6/ released was increased. An aerosol concentration of approx. 25 gm/m/sup 3/ (150 gm) was the largest achieved. Electron microscopy was used to determine the morphology of the aerosol particles and to obtain geometric size measurements from micrographs and a cascaded impactor wa… more

Small power systems study. Volume. Study results. Technical summary report

Description: The Division of Solar Technology of the Department of Energy is currently examining the market potential of a number of dispersed solar energy systems, including the small (less than or equal to 10 MW/sub e/) solar thermal power system. Small fossil-fueled generating units in the United States utility system, (i.e., investor-owned, municipal, and cooperatives) have a current capacity of approximately 8000 MW/sub e/ or about 1.5 percent of the total US electrical capacity, and provide a large po… more

The Development and Field Testing of a System for Determination of Ultrafine Activity Particle Size Distribution and Working Levels

Description: Recent investigations of radon decay products in indoor air have shown that what has been called the unattached'' fraction is in fact an ultrafine size aerosol with diameters in the range of 0.5 to 10 nm. There are a number of difficulties in characterizing particles in this size range. Classical diffusion batteries using screens with high mesh numbers do not have the resolution to give detailed information for the ultra fine range. The use of single screens of differing mesh numbers (Graded Sc… more

Integrated methods for production of clean char and its combustion properties. Interim final technical report, September 1, 1991--August 31, 1992

Description: An integrated method consisting of physical coal cleaning, mild gasification (MG) and low temperature oxidation (LTO) is proposed to produce chars with SO{sub 2} emissions at least 50% lower than those of their parent coals. Mild gasification and char desulfurization studies are conducted in both a batch fluidized-bed reactor and in a continuous rotary kiln reactor. MG chars were subjected to a LTO step to remove additional sulfur. Under non-optimized conditions, SO{sub 2} emissions of the MG c… more
