Program SIGMA1 (version 79-1): Doppler broaden evaluated cross sections in the evaluated nuclear data file/version B (ENDF/B) format

Description: Program SIGMA1 Doppler-broadens evaluated cross sections in the ENDF/B format. The program requires that input cross sections be tabulated as linearly interpolable functions of energy in ENDF/B File 3; broadened cross sections, in this same form, replace the original values in the output tape. This report describes the methods used in the code and serves as a user's guide. A listing of the source deck is available on request.

An evaluation of simple iron-water radiation shields and radiation measurements within concrete-lined and -capped pits

Description: Program 3 of Operation BREN consisted in a study of the performance of biological shields composed of various arrangements of steel, water, and borated polyethylene in spherical, cubical, and parallelepipedal geometries. Studies were also made of the radiation levels within concrete-lined and -capped pits, 4 ft in dia and 8 ft deep. The principal radiation source was the ORNL Health Physics Research Reactor, an unshielded, unreflected, 90 wt % U-10 wt % Mo, cylindrical bare-metal assembly. It w… more

LLL evaluated-nuclear-data library (ENDL): graphs of cross sections from the library. [Basic data for transport calculations]

Description: Graphs of neutron cross sections and related parameters for the LLL ENDL are presented. LLL and others use the evaluated nuclear data given here for neutron transport and related calculations. This document presents data contained in the library as of October 31, 1978. Evaluations of 79 nuclides/elements have been changed since the 1976 edition. Five tables discuss the information in the report, while the cross sections themselves are included on six microfiche.

Theoretical interpretation of high-Z discs irradiated with 1. 06. mu. laser light

Description: High Z discs have been irradiated with 1.06 ..mu.. laser light at intensities between 7 x 10/sup 13/ and 3 x 10/sup 15/ W/cm, and pulse lengths between 200 and 1000 ps. Due to the high Z, inverse bremsstrahlung becomes an important absorption effect and competes strongly with resonance absorption and stimulated scattering. We find that inhibited electron thermal conduction and non-LTE ionization physics are important. Their inclusion in the LASNEX modeling results in steepened temperature and d… more

Target station design for a 1 MW pulsed spallation neutron source

Description: Target stations are vital components of the 1 MW, next generation spallation neutron source proposed for LANSCE. By and large, target stations design determines the overall performance of the facility. Many traditional concepts will probably have to be rethought, and many new concepts will have to be put forward to meet the 1 MW challenge. This article gives a brief overview of the proposed neutron spallation source from the target station viewpoint, as well as the general philosophy adopted fo… more

Magnetic flux shielding for the precision muon g-2 storage ring superconducting inflector

Description: A muon g-2 experiment (E821) at the AGS requires knowledge of the magnetic field over muon orbits at the level of 0.1 ppM. The superconducting inflector involves a double cosine theta winding; this design approximately cancels its fringe field. Nevertheless its residual field would effect the homogeneity of the storage ring magnetic field. A method of using a superconducting sheet surrounding the inflector to further reduce the fringe field was proposed by one of the authors, W. Meng. An experi… more

Improved semi-analytic algorithms for finding the flux from a cylindrical source

Description: Hand calculation methods for radiation shielding problems continue to be useful for scoping studies, for checking the results from sophisticated computer simulations and in teaching shielding personnel. This paper presents two algorithms which give improved results for hand calculations of the flux at a lateral detector point from a cylindrical source with an intervening slab shield parallel to the cylinder axis. The first algorithm improves the accuracy of the approximate flux flux formula of … more

An analysis of the finite-differenced, even-parity discrete-ordinates equations in slab geometry

Description: Considerable effort has been expended in recent years in finding improved spatial differencing schemes for the neutron and radiation transport equations. Standard criteria used to select a candidate scheme are its order of spatial convergence for small mesh size and its positivity in the sense that positive solutions emerge from positive input data. More recently, it has become clear that truly robust schemes must behave well in diffusing regions and must be compatible with an effective iterati… more

Description: The neutron resonance phenomena constitute one of the most fundamental subjects in nuclear physics as well as in reactor physics. It is the area where the concepts of nuclear interaction and the treatment of the neutronic balance in reactor lattices become intertwined. The later requires the detailed knowledge of resonance structures of many nuclide of practical interest to the development of nuclear energy. The key issue of the resonance treatment in reactor applications is directly associated… more
