System for vacuum pouring of epoxy tensile and impact specimens with a study of the behavior of these specimens at 77 K and 293 K

Description: The purpose of the investigation was to establish a suitable technique for vacuum pouring of epoxy test specimens and to study the behavior of these specimens at 77 K and 293 K. A series of tensile and impact tests was conducted using specimens made from the following resins: Epon 828, Epon 871, and Epon curing agent Z. These materials are of general interest to designers of magnets for cryogenic service. Tests of the specimens were carried out at 77 K and 293 K. The 77 K data indicate that ten… more

Overview of the Design, Construction, and Operation of Interstate Liquid Petroleum Pipelines.

Description: The U.S. liquid petroleum pipeline industry is large, diverse, and vital to the nation's economy. Comprised of approximately 200,000 miles of pipe in all fifty states, liquid petroleum pipelines carried more than 40 million barrels per day, or 4 trillion barrel-miles, of crude oil and refined products during 2001. That represents about 17% of all freight transported in the United States, yet the cost of doing so amounted to only 2% of the nation's freight bill. Approximately 66% of domestic pet… more

Energy consumption in the pipeline industry

Description: Estimates are developed of the energy consumption and energy intensity (EI) of five categories of U.S. pipeline industries: natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products, coal slurry, and water. For comparability with other transportation modes, it is desirable to calculate EI in Btu/Ton-Mile, and this is done, although the necessary unit conversions introduce additional uncertainties. Since water and sewer lines operate by lift and gravity, a comparable EI is not definable.

Analysis of alternative-fuel price trajectories

Description: Findings are presented from a study to (1) acquire, analyze, and report alternative published price projections including both oil- and coal-price trajectories, and to (2) apply the fixed-annuity formula to the updated primary source projections (Energy Information Administration; Data Resources, Inc.; and Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates, Inc.) and to the newly acquired price projections. This report also encompasses: comparisons of key assumptions underlying the price projections, a… more

Carbon-14 removal for disposal of reactor deionizer resins

Description: Disposal of depleted ion exchange resins from the primary system of the Savannah River Site (SRS) reactors is complicated by the presence of Carbon-14. Because Carbon-14 has a long half-life (5,730 years) and high mobility in soils, burial of the resins is no longer a viable option. Consequently some 35 spent reactor deionizers have accumulated that are to be stored aboveground in H-Area for an indefinite period. Spent deionizers containing Carbon-14 will continue to accumulate with operation o… more

Aniline hydrogenolysis on the Pt(111) single crystal surface: Mechanisms for C-N bond activation

Description: Hydrogenolysis of C-N bond on transition metals is a crucial step in hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) reactions. Despite the overall complexity of HDN processes, the details of important surface reactions can be characterized using model reactions of organonitrogen compounds on single crystal model catalysts. The structure and reactivity of well characterized aniline monolayers on the Pt(111) surface both in vacuum and in the presence of hydrogen is discussed here. Adsorption and reactions of aniline… more

Inventory of China's Energy-Related CO2 Emissions in 2008

Description: Although China became the world's largest emitter of energy-related CO{sub 2} emissions in 2007, China does not publish annual estimates of CO{sub 2} emissions and most published estimates of China's emissions have been done by other international organizations. Undertaken at the request of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the US Department of Energy, this study examines the feasibility of applying the EIA emissions inventory methodology to estimate China's emissions from publishe… more

Lead macro-encapsulation conceptual and experimental studies

Description: Macro-encapsulation, the regulatory treatment for radioactively contaminated lead (mixed) waste has been conceptually and experimentally evaluated for practical application. Epoxy encapsulants molded around lead billets have proven to be exceptionally rugged, easily applied, have high radiation and chemical stability, and minimize required process equipment and production of secondary wastes. This technology can now be considered developed, and can be applied as discussed in this report.

Fouling formation of an olefin in the presence of oxygen and thiophenol

Description: A kinetic model was developed to predict the fouling rate for autoxidation of indene in the presence of thiophenol. The kinetic constants were determined by analyzing the fouling data obtained with and without thiophenol. An initial rapid formation of hydroperoxide was observed in the presence of thiophenol; however, the product(s) formed by thiophenol was found to inhibit further formation of hydroperoxide. The maximum concentration of hydroperoxide and gum were about the same for experiments … more

Distillation of liquid fuels by thermogravimetry

Description: In this paper, design and operation of a custom-built thermogravimetric apparatus for the distillation of liquid fuels are reported. Using a sensitive balance with scale of 0.001 g and ASTM distillation glassware, several petroleum and petroleum-derived samples have been analyzed by the thermogravimetric distillation method. When the ASTM distillation glassware is replaced by a micro-scale unit, sample size could be reduced from 100 g to 5-10 g. A computer program has been developed to transfer… more

Description: An evaluation of eastern shale oil as an asphalt additive to reduce oxidative age hardening and moisture susceptibility is being conducted. An eastern shale oil residue having a viscosity of 1.30 Pa`s at 60{degrees}C (140{degrees}F) was blended with three different petroleum-derived asphalts that are known to be very susceptible to oxidative aging. In addition, blends of the eastern shale oil residue and the petroleum-derived asphalts are being coated onto three different aggregates that are kn… more
