Correlation of alluvial deposits at the Nevada Test Site

Description: Because characteristics of rock layers and problems in drilling must be studied before radioactive waste can be safely contained, an evaluation was made of methods for correlating alluvial deposits at Yucca Flat of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Although correlation of Tertiary volcanic tuff beds at the NTS has been successfully achieved, correlation of stratigraphic zones in the overlying alluvium has posed technical difficulties. We have evaluated several methods for correlating alluvial deposits from drillholes, including electric resistivity logs (E logs), visual examination of sidewall samples and comparison of their carbonate (CO/sub 2/) content, downhole stereo photography for identifying debris flow deposits, caliche age-dating, and specific yield and permeability measurements of deposits. For predicting the thickness of zones having similar physical properties in the alluvium, E log measurements were found to be the most useful of these methods.

Magnetic Properties of Insulators. Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering Period May 15, 1961 to August 15, 1961

Description: The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of color centers in additively colored KCl crystals is measured to observe the effects of optical bleaching at room temperature. Earlier measurements on the F-center are confirmed and the susceptibility is measured at 78 and 300 deg K over five decades of power, including the very low power region. The width and the saturation properties of the individual multiplets are studied in detail and the technique of making E PR measurements on inhomogeneously broadened lines is discussed. A calculation is presented which shows that a slight departure from a Lorentzian multiplet shape can account for the saturation data. The bleached crystals show a resonance which has a width of 35 gauss and a different rate of saturation than the F- center. This resonance is associated with the B-band which appears in the optical absorption. (auth)

Approach to decision modeling for an ignition test reactor

Description: A comparison matrix decision model is applied to candidates for a D-T ignition tokamak (TNS), including assessment of semi-quantifiable or judgemental factors as well as quantitative ones. The results show that TNS is mission-sensitive with a choice implied between near-term achievability and reactor technology.

Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Final report, February 26, 1979-July 15, 1980

Description: Extensive modifications were made to the multi-source deposition apparatus. These include the installation of a larger vacuum chamber on the existing system. The new chamber provides improved inter-source shielding, an improved substrate mounting and heating system, and a vacuum interlock for introducing substrates. CdS resistivity control by both In doping and off-stoichiometric deposition has been investigated. Indium doping has been achieved both by diffusion from a pre-deposited In layer and by using In doped sputtering targets. Resistivities in the range 0.1 to 5 ..cap omega..-cm have been obtained for target doping levels of from 0.1 to 1 at. percent of In. These resistivities were found to be critically dependent on the H/sub 2/S injection rate, apparently because of compensation by Cd vacancies. Off-stoichiometry CdS coatings with solar-illuminated resistivities of about 10/sup 2/ ..cap omega..-cm have been deposited, using a cyclic reactive sputtering process were the H/sub 2/S injection is periodically switched on and off. The Cu/sub x/S deposition process was found to be sensitive to the period of cathode operation prior to coating deposition, probably because of the conditioning of cathode and shield surfaces. All-sputter-deposited Cd(Zn)S/Cu/sub 2/S cells, with Cd(Zn)S layers deposited using a Cd-0.10 Zn target doped with 2 atomic percent In, have yielded efficiencies of approx. 0.4%. All-sputtered cells with efficiencies of approx. 0.6% have been fabricated, using undoped CdS deposited by the pulse injection process. Efficiencies of approx. 1.2% have been achieved for cells with undoped sputter-deposited CdS and CuCl dry processed Cu/sub 2/S.

APPLICATIONS OF SNAP REACTOR SYSTEMS TO COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES

MHD Coal-Fired Flow Facility. Quarterly technical progress report, January-March 1980

Description: The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) reports on significant activity, task status, planned research, testing, development, and conclusions for the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Coal-Fired Flow Facility (CFFF) and the Research and Development Laboratory. Although slowed by incessant rain during several days, work on the CFFF Bid Packages progressed to nearly 100 percent completion, excluding later punchlist items. On the quench system, the cyclone separator was delivered to UTSI, and under Downstream Components, the secondary combustor was received and the radiant slagging furnace was emplaced at the CFFF. Water quality analysis of Woods Reservoir provided the expected favorable results, quite similar to last year's. Generator experiments describing local current distribution are reported along with behavior under conditions of imposed leakage. Also, during the Quarter, the shelter for the cold flow modeling facility was constructed and circuits installation begun. A jet turbine combustor was tested for use as a vitiation burner. Samples taken from the exhaust duct, besides other applications, show that the refractories used are performing well in alleviating heat loss while exhibiting acceptable degredation. A new resistive power take-off network was designed and implemented.

PROCESSES FOR RECOVERY OF URANIUM AND THORIUM FROM GRAPHITE-BASE FUEL ELEMENTS. PART II

Description: Laboratory-scale tests on methods for recovering uranium and thorium from graphite-base reactor fuel elements are reported. The 90% HNO/sub 3/ process, which involves simultaneous disintegration and leaching in 21 M HNO/sub 3/, is applicable to all fuel elenments which do not contain coated fuel particles. Leaching of irradiated (0.001% burnup) fuels containing 3 and 12% uranlum recovered approximates 99.3 and 99.9%, respectively, of the uranium in two 4-hr leaches with boiling acid. The graphite residue retained > 50% of the long-lived fission products. Three successive leaches of fuel containing uranium and thorium recovered approximates 99% of both elements. Uranium recoveries by combustion in oxygen followed by dissolution of the ash hn nitric acid or fluorlde-catalyzed nitric acid are quantitative only when the fuel is not coated, does not contain Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-coated fuel particles, and is free from impurities such as iron. During combustion up to 95% of the Ru-106 was volatilized from irradiated specimens. Recoveries, by leaching with 70% HNO/sub 3/, from fuel specimens containing Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-coated fuel particles were greater than 99% when the specimens were ground finer than 200 mesh to ensure crushing of the fuel particles. STUDIES OF THE SCINTILLATION PROCESS IN CsI(Tl)

Description: The scintillation response of CsI(Tl) crystals, having various thallium contents, was measured for excitation of the crystals by monoenergetic gamma rays, protons, and alpha particles. The investi gation was made to provide a test of some of the features of a theoretical model of the scintillation process in thallium-activated alkali iodides proposed by Murray and Meyer. In order to insure that the results obtained in this program would provide a critical test of the scintillation model, special attention was paid to technical effects which could influence the interpretation of the experimental data. For example, the effect of the pulseanalysis time on the relative scintillation response of CsI(Tl) to various charged parti cles was investigated. In addition, the emission spectra of the CsI(Tl) crystals were measured for excitation by x rays, protons, and alpha particles. The results of the investigation showed that the scintillation efficiency of CsI(Tl) is a continuous function of dE/dx, as assumed in the scintillation model, within the accuracy of the experiments when the effect of delta ravs are considered. This led to the conclusion that the light output of CsI(Tl) crystals is, in general, a nonlinear function of the energy of the particle. The shape of the dL/dE versus dE/dx curve for CsI(Tl) crystals is shown to be nearly independent of the thallium content of the crystal. This is in distinct contrast to the predictions of the scinti llation model. An examination of the emission spectra of CsI(Tl) crystals showed that light is emitted in a band, centered at about 3300A, which is characteristic of the emission of the pure crystal, as well as the characteriatic thallium luminescence. The relative intensity of this luminescence with respect to the thallium- activator luminescence increases as the ionization density in the crystal increases and increases as the thallium content decreases. …

Design of a water jet drill for development of geothermal resources. Progress report, October 1--November 30, 1977

Description: Progress is reported in the evaluation of the performance of a water jet drill in a stressed rock, particularly in drilling at hole diameters in excess of one inch. Drilling tests are being carried out in a barrier pillar in a layer of coarse, lead-bearing sandstone. Problems encountered in the test drilling are discussed. (JGB)

Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium. Quarterly Report No. 2, December 15, 1961 to March 14, 1962

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the extent to which Zr and Zr alloys exhibit delayed failure (static fatigune) as caused by a combination of absorbed H and applied stress. Both notched and unnotched specimens of unalloyed Zr and Zircaloy-2 were hydrogenated to 200 ppm and 500 ppm by means of a modified Sieverts apparatus; specimens were evaluated at room temperature. Thus far, no time-dependent fracture was observed which can be attributed to the delayed failure phenomenon; it appears that these materials are relatively insensitive to static fatigune. The effects of grain size, temperature, cold deformation, and superheated water and steam corrosion on susceptibility to delayed failure are being determined. (auth)

Future engineering needs of mirror fusion reactors

Savannah River Site computing architecture migration guide

Description: The SRS Computing Architecture is a vision statement for site computing which enumerates the strategies which will guide SRS computing efforts for the 1990s. Each strategy is supported by a number of feature statements which clarify the strategy by providing additional detail. Since it is a strategic planning document, the Architecture has sitewide applicability and endorsement but does not attempt to specify implementation details. It does, however, specify that a document will be developed to guide the migration from the current site environment to that envisioned by the new architecture. The goal of this document, the SRS Computing Architecture Migration Guide, is to identify specific strategic and tactical tasks which would have to be completed to fully implement the architectural vision for site computing as well as a recommended sequence and timeframe for addressing these tasks. It takes into account the expected availability of technology, the existing installed base, and interdependencies among architectural components and objectives.
