Characterization of carbonaceous materials using extraction with supercritical pentane

Description: The use of carbonaceous adsorbents is limited by irreversible adsorption of some compounds so the use of supercritical pentane as an extracting solvent was examined. Carbon black appeared to be broken down slowly, but continuously, by the penane. To see if other types of carbon behaved similarly, high purity graphite, technical grade graphites, active carbons, and charcoals were examined. The extracts were characterized by uv spectroscopy, packed column chromatography using flame ionization and… more

Controlled Synthesis of Polyenes by Catalytic Methods. Progress Report for the period December 1, 1989 - November 30, 1992

Description: A more direct approach to polyenes by the direct polymerization of acetylenes has been achieved. We were able to show that polymerization of acetylene itself can be controlled with a well- characterized alkylidene catalyst, but only if a base such as quinuclidine is present in order to slow down the rate of propagation relative to initiation. (Quinuclidine may also stabilize vinylalkylidene intermediates formed in the reaction). Unfortunately, living polyenes'' were no more stable than isolated… more

Laser excited nonresonant fluorescence spectroscopy. Second annual progress report

Description: The relative populations of numerous tin levels populated by collisional energy transfer from an initially laser pumped level were obtained. These populations yield information concerning the relative rates of energy transfer for the various buffer gases studied. The results indicated two distinct energy transfer behaviors. First, for certain tin levels diatomic collision partners produce populations nearly two orders of magnitude higher than when rare gases are present. This behavior is attrib… more

Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Development

Description: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are high efficiency energy conversion devices. Present materials set, using yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte, limit the cell operating temperatures to 800 C or higher. It has become increasingly evident however that lowering the operating temperature would provide a more expeditious route to commercialization. The advantages of intermediate temperature (600 to 800 C) operation are related to both economic and materials issues. Lower operating temperatu… more

SELECTIVITY IN ZEOLITE OCCLUSION OF OLEFINS

Description: Selective occlusions of straight-chain paraffins in the presence of branched-chain hydrocarbons by naturally occurring zeolites of suitable dimension was reported as early as 1944 by Barrer and Ibbitson. More recently the capacity of synthetic zeolites or molecular sieves to absorb exclusively the straight-chain hydrocarbons from complex hydrocarbon mixtures has found extensive application in the petroleum industry. Under the conditions developed for most sieving operations any normal olefins p… more

Hydrogen Production via a Commerically Ready Inorganic membrane Reactor

Description: It has been known that use of the hydrogen selective membrane as a reactor (MR) could potentially improve the efficiency of the water shift reaction (WGS), one of the least efficient unit operations for production of high purity hydrogen from syngas. However, no membrane reactor technology has been reduced to industrial practice thus far, in particular for a large-scale operation. This implementation and commercialization barrier is attributed to the lack of a commercially viable hydrogen selec… more

Mechanism of hydrodenitrogenation

Description: In this project it was proposed that the selectivity of the HDN reaction can be affected by an alteration of the catalyst acidity since it is possible that an acidic Hofmann-like deamination C--N--C bonds. Such a possibility was verified in this work by studying the denitrogenation of piperidine over acidic catalysts, and it was demonstrated that Bronsted acid sites are active for the denitrogenation of N-heterocycles, whereas Lewis sites are not. To better understand the role of acidic sites i… more
