D7H-test results

Description: Data were reduced from the voltage-time relations stored in files D7H001 to D7H090 on HP1000. The I-B calibration curve is included. The data base is shown and can be used by the 9845B. The data include the quench location, Q/sub 2/ layer 1 top, Q/sub 3/ layer 1 bottom and the quench current and its normalized value with respect to short sample, I/sub c/ = 4920A at 4.4 K, I/sub c/ = 6710 A at 1.8 K. The resistance (..cap omega../cm) was calculated using the propagation time according to the vol… more

PERFORMANCE TESTS OF SNAP 10A THERMOELECTRIC ELEMENTS

Description: Apparatus for the performanee testing of SNAP 10A thermoelectric elements was designed, constructed, and is now in operation. Elements may be tested for any desired length of tfme up to 1400 deg F and in a vacuum of 1 x 10/ sup -5/ of Hg. The equipment used for these tcsts may also be utilized for measuring Seebeck coefficient and resistance as a function of temperature. Element performance is derived from the data on voltages and temperatures. The performance variables which are reported in gr… more

Stress Corrosion Cracking Response of 304 Stainless Steel in ASerated and Dearated Water

Description: Scoping stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests of 304 stainless steel (SS) were performed in 75 C and 250 C aerated pressurized water (APW) and 250 C deaerated pressurized water (DPW). The 250 C APW environment was used to initiate intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and then the water was deaerated and hydrogenated to see if IGSCC continued in 250 C DPW. Tests were performed with and without 200 ppb SO{sub 4}{sup =}. The 304 SS test materials were evaluated in either the as-received… more

Negative tandem mirror

Description: A tandem mirror configuration can be created by combining hot electron end cell plasmas with neutral beam pumping. A region of large negative potential formed in each end cell confines electrons in the central cell. The requirement of charge neutrality causes the central cell potential to become negative with respect to ground in order to confine ions as well as electrons. We discuss the method of producing and calculating the desired axial potential profile, and show the calculated axial poten… more

DETECTION AND TELEMETERING OF IONIZING RADIATION BY FREQUENCY VARIATION

Description: Three methods are discussed for detecting ionizing radiation and transitting the intelligence. All three methods make use of the reactamce variation of a frequency determining network, to vary the frequency of an R.F. transitter as a function of ionizing radiation entering an ion chamber or counter. The first method is based on the capacitance znd subsequent frequency variation of am electrometer incorporated in an ion chamber. The variation is achieved by a moving came electrometer, where the … more

Thermoelectric Nuclear Fuel Element. Addendum to Final Report

Description: A twenty-couple fission-heated thermoelectric generator, TE-5, was tested in the Westinghouse Testing Reactor. The open circuit voltage, instantaneous closed circuit voltage, steady state closed circuit voltage, instantaneous closed circuit current, and steady state closed circuit current were monitored during the 23-day cycle. The initial power output was 110 watts (48 amps at 2.3 volts) at a TH of 660 to 690 deg C and a T/sup C/ of 130 deg C. After 23 days the output was approximately one wat… more

Quench Protection of High Field Nb{sub 3}Sn Magnets for VLHC

Description: Fermilab is developing high field magnets for a possible future VLHC. The high levels of stored energy in these magnets present significant challenges to the magnet quench protection. Simulation programs have been developed and used to analyze temperature and voltage distributions during a quench and to performed parametric studies on conductor and quench-heater requirements. This paper concludes with a proposal for a set of quench protection parameters for the VLHC magnets.
