Analytical Chemistry Division Semiannual Progress Report For Period Ending October 20, 1955

Description: The development of ionic methods for the determination of corrosive products in the highly radioactive Homogeneous Reactor (HR) fuels has been of major interest in the work of the Ionic Analyses Laboratory. Methods for the spectrophotometric determination of aluminum and for the polarographic determination of iron in HR fuels have been developed. The polarographic determination of molybdenum in uranyl sulfate solutions was studied. A polarographic method for the determination of zinc was developed. A fluorometric method for the determination of microgram amounts of fluoride was studied. Three organic reagents were investigated as precipitants for microgram quantities of zirconium in HR fuel. The automatic photometric titration technique was applied to the determination of thorium and of sulfate. A method was developed for the ion-exchange separation and potentiometric titration of cobalt. The ultraviolet absorption spectra of technetium and rhenium were studied.

Products Produced in Batch Neutron Irradiation of Thorium

Description: Calculated data and graphs describing the effects of batch thermal-neutron irradiation of thorium, the usual method of operation of heterogeneous reactors, are presented. The buildup and decay of U233, Pa233, other heavy isotopes, and fission products are considered on the basis of best available cross-section and fission-yield data. The effects of these irradiation products on the Thorex chemical separation process are indicated briefly.

Air Sample Activity vs Flow Rate

Description: A bibliography on the subject of air sample activity vs flow rate has been prepared. The findings in two documents reviewed have been applied directly to this problem. It is concluded that air sample activity is not dependent on flow rate when sampling particles whose average diameter in 0.06 micron or greater.

The Effect of the Maxwell Distribution of Velocities on the Neutron Density and Diffusion Length in a Metal Sphere

Description: The change in the simple [formula] distribution of neutrons in a spherical lump of uranium caused by the distribution in velocities of thermal neutrons is calculated. If the calculated curve is fitted as well as possible by a simple [formula] curve, it is shown that the value of [formula] obtained in this way is a function of [formula], the radius of the sphere. For small radii the [formula] obtained in this manner will be as much as 25% greater than the [formula] corresponding to average velocity neutrons. The change in the thermal utilization caused by the distribution in velocities is discussed. The flux of neutrons into a sphere is calculated taking into account the velocity distribution and this is compared with the usual theory.

The Diffusion Length of Thermal Neutrons in Uranium

Description: Measurements made in a uranium cylinder result in a mean value of 1.55 cm. for the diffusion length L for distances of 1 to 4 cm. from the base of the cylinder. Calculations give a value which agrees with the experimental result and show further that L increases from 1.40 to 1.63 cm. as the neutrons diffuse a distance of 5 cm. into the uranium.

Fractionation of Fission Products and Heavy Elements by Volatilization Methods

Description: Technical report describing the attempt to separate the long lived fission product oxides by volatilization methods. A fractionization crucible was used. The fractionations give a fair idea of the relative volatilities of the longer lived fission products and also of the degrees of separation of the plutonium oxide or oxides from the fission products.

The Preparation of High-Purity Beryllium Oxide

Description: Abstract. A method for the preparation of beryllium oxide of high purity is presented. Beryllium basic acetate (BeO-3Be(C2H3O2)2) is prepared from the metal or a convenient salt, a chloroform solution of this material extracted with redistilled water, the dried basic acetate distilled in a quartz apparatus, and this purified material converted to the oxide by fuming down with sulfuric acid and igniting at 1000 degrees C. Impurities detectable spectrographically were reduced to a very low level.

The Rapid Determination of Nitric Acid and Thorium in Thorium Nitrate Solutions

Description: Abstract. The physico-chemical methods of determining nitric acid and thorium nitrate in solutions containing these two materials were investigated. Conductimetric titration with sodium hydroxide can be used to determine nitric acid accurately. the titration of thorium nitrate requires a separate standardization of the base however, since a basic salt is precipitated rather the normal hydroxide. The titration of thorium is reproductible however, so and empirical standardization can be used. The measurement of the specific gravity and refractivity of the solutions provides a method of determining the concentrations in terms of these two variable. Equations for the concentrations in terms of specific gravity and refractively are given, both in pure solutions and in those saturated with methyl isobutyl ketone.

Summary of the Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Mineralogy of Pennsylvanian and Permian Rocks of Oklahoma in Relation to Uranium-Resource Potential

Description: Report describes the structural and stratigraphic framework, depositional environment, and petrology and petrography of the various Pennsylvanian-Permian time and rock units present in Oklahoma. This report identifies five geologic settings favorable for the localization of uranium, such as alluvial fan deposits, oil-productive structures where Permian sandstones are altered, tidal-flat sandstone-silstones, channel sandstones on gentle structural features, and oil-productive Cherokee sandstones.
