Development of ultrafiltration and inorganic adsorbents for reducing volumes of low-level and intermediate-level liquid waste: January--March 1978

Description: The exposure of noncellulosic ultrafiltration membranes to a radioactive environment simulating up to 24 months of exposure to a beta dose of 10 ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ and a gamma dose of 10/sup -5/ ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ did not show any conclusive evidence of membrane degradation. Viscosity measurements for control membranes and irradiated membranes indicate no changes in polymer molecular weight were caused by the radiation exposure. Subsurface stabilization by grouting of a simulated underground tank

Description: A moisture barrier using water, sodium silicate, formamide, calcium chloride and penechem with a gel time of one-half hour was constructed around a simulated tank 10 feet deep by 10 feet diameter in the subsurface of the 200 West Area. As a test of the moisture barrier integrity, the volume which would normally be occupied by a tank was excavated and filled with water. The barrier was unable to contain the water. TANK 241-AN-107 CORROSION COUPON LABORATORY ANALYSIS

Description: To support the corrosion study for Tank 241-AN-107, corrosion coupons consisting of C-rings and pins were removed from four detectors of the corrosion probe retrieved from the tank. The detectors were located as follows: one in the sludge layer, one in the liquid layer, one in the lower head space and the last in the upper head space. ASTM Method G-190 was used to determine the amount of corrosion product present.

Tritium Waste Control Project progress report: January--March, 1976. [Tritiated liquid waste decontamination by molecular excitation and catalytic exchange detritiation studies]

Description: A series of experiments was conducted to determine the amount of tritium needed in the spectrometer cell to obtain the infrared spectrum of HTO in the 1 to 5 ..mu..m region. Experiments using HDO as a surrogate indicated that 400 mCi of tritium would be required. Test loading experiments with HTO were performed and monitored with an ionization chamber. Evaporation of Pd, Mo, Te, and Sb From Nitric Acid and Sodium Nitrate Solutions at Atmospheric Pressure

Description: In order to reduce low-level radioactive liquid waste, evaporation at atmospheric pressure was carried out for aqueous solutions containing a sub-volatile fission product in both nitric acid and sodium nitrate solutions. Decontamination factors of the distillates for Pd, Mo, Te, and Sb were the order of 10,000, and the percentages per square meters adhering to the condenser and the inside of the evaporator lid were between 0.001 and 0.0001.
