An Ultrasonic Method for Bond Testing Reactor Fuel Elements

Description: Ultrasonic testing has been investigated as a possible non-destructive method for checking the bond integrity of certain type fuel elements. Equipment has been developed to inspect experimental fuel elements for various research programs. Circuits have been devised to discriminate the size of defects and to map the areas which are unbonded.

Corrosion of Stainless Steel, Titanium, and Tantalum in Plutonium - Nitric Acid Solutions

Description: The letter E. R. Irish/W. H. Swift to R.E. Burns and H. H. Hopkins, dated August 15, 1956, subject Plutonium Concentration Problems, requested information on corrosion of stainless steel, titanium, and tantalum in plutonium nitrate-nitric acid solution, with and without sulfate ion. Experimental conditions and results of tests designed to yield the requested information are given below.

Crystallite Sizes of PuO_2 Powders

Description: In connection with studies of the chemical reactivity of PuO_2 to hydrofluorination, samples were examined by X-ray diffraction for crystallite size and perfection. The PuO_2 was formed by thermal decomposition of the oralate. The reactivity of this oxide, as well as that of other solid oxides is affected by the conditions of preparation. Besides the obvious influence of surface, including lattice strain and other structural irregularities in the particles. Each particle is composed of a number… more

The Suppression of Chlorine Volatilization in Nitric Acid Distillation

Description: Description of Invention: Chloride-induced corrosion is a serious problem in the Purex acid recovery operation and in the evaporative concentration of process streams and waste solutions. In the case of Purex acid recovery, it has been shown that trace chloride will volatilize with the nitric acid and reflux in the acid fractionator, thus causing especially severe corrosion at that point. These traces of chloride may enter the process form several sources, i.e., as an impurity in the technical … more

Pile Periods and the Inhour Equation Accounting for Delayed Neutron Groups from Fission of U²³⁵ and Pu²³⁹

Description: Calculations are presented regarding the effect of delayed neutrons in reactors fueled with mixtures of Pu²³⁹ and U²³⁵. Results are plotted to illustrate the change in thermal flux as a function of time for various positive or negative step changes in reactivity.

Notes on Sheath meeting at SRI, April 17-18, 1956

Description: Dr. Laurence opened the discussion by saying that AECL is concentrating its interest on fuel rods for NRU to be ready at the end of the year; these will be unbonded, based on NRX experience. Chalk River, however, is prepared to go to bonded fuel elements, and how has in extrusion cladding at AlCan an alternate process. AECL is putting its trust in extrusion clad flat plates for the immediate future. General Electric Co. of Canada is now making UO{sub 2} fuel rods; these are UO{sub 2} pellets mac… more

200 Area waste storage study

Description: As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bas… more

The Effects of Ternary Alloying Additions on the Corrosion Resistance of Epsilon-Phase Uranium-Zirconium Alloys

Description: Abstract: "The corrosion rate in 680 F water of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium binary alloy was found to be -0.20 mg/(cm2)(hr), and that of the uranium-40 w/o zirconium binary alloy was -0.34 mg/(cm2)(hr). Both alloys correlated uniformly, with no evidence of discontinuous failure. Normal variations in interstitial content in either alloy had no significant effect on corrosion behavior. Tantalum additions, in the range of 0.2 to 5 w/o, improved the corrosion rate of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium b… more

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Description: Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.
