Informal Technical Progress Report and Budget for Incremental Funding

Description: The principal activities during the last year were related to LAMPF experiments, a newly initiated radiochemical search for Glashow particles, and the writing up of experimental work completed at FERMILAB studying the interaction of 400-MeV protons and 150-MeV pions with complex nuclei. Collaboration is proceeding with Los Alamos on heavy methanes as atmospheric tracers and in proposing a geological search for enhanced solar neutrinos in past geological times.

The soudan 2 experiment

Description: Soudan 2 is an 1100-ton tracking calorimeter which is being constructed to search for nucleon decay. The detector consists of finely segmented iron instrumented with drift tubes, and records three spatial coordinates and dE/dx for every gas crossing. Excellent event-reconstruction capability, particle identification, and muon sign and direction determination give superior rejection of the neutrino background to nucleon decay in many modes. The first 275 tons of Soudan 2 is operating and a charg… more

A High-resolution TOF Detector - A Possible Way to Compete with a RICH Detector

Description: Using two identical 64-pixel Burle/Photonis MCP-PMTs to provide start and stop signals, they have achieved a timing resolution of {sigma}{sub Single{_}detector} {approx} 7.2 ps for N{sub pe} {approx} 50 photoelectrons (N{sub pe}) with a laser diode providing a 1 mm spot on the MCP window. The limiting resolution achieved was {sigma}{sub Single{_}detector} {approx} 5.0 ps for N{sub pe} {approx} 180, for which they estimate the MCP-PMT contribution of {sigma}{sub MCP-PMT} {approx} 4.5 ps. The ele… more

Finite element stress analysis of D0 test beam transporter mainframe assembly

Description: The D0 test beam transporter mainframe assembly is a structural frame lying in a horizontal plane and designed to support and orient the D0 test liquid argon calorimeter properly in the test beam. Azimuthal adjustment is provided by a turntable with a mean radius of 64 inches, supported on a pressurized oil bearing. Angular positioning is achieved by an hydraulic actuator attached to the turntable which places force against an arm on the calorimeter vessel, causing it to rotate. Vertical positi… more

Ion chamber gamma burst detector

Description: A gamma ray burst detector of x-ray photons 2 to 10 keV is designed to maximize area, 100 m/sup 2/, and sensitivity, 10/sup -10/ ergs cm/sup -2/ s/sup 1/2/ modest directionality, 2 x 10/sup -4/ sr, and minimize thickness, 3 mg cm/sup -2/, as a plastic space balloon ion chamber. If the log N - log S curve for gamma bursts extends as the -3/2 power, the sensitivity is limited by gamma-burst peak overlap in time so that the question of the size spectrum and isotropy is maximally tested. Supernova … more

Shot report, Holo-17-Holo-22 Rex-9

Description: We report on a series of holographic shots using explosives to generate ejecta from lead. These experiments covered a range of geometries including point initiation and plane wave initiation for the H.E., and using a gas-fill in the cavity where the ejecta was produced. The final experiment, Rex-9 was a Fabry-Perot experiment at Site 300 which provided the velocity history of the lead surface for the purpose of normalizing the code being used to calculate the position of the lead surface in the… more

An expression of interest in a Super Fixed Target Beauty Facility (SFT) at the Superconducting Super Collider

Description: The concept of a Super Fixed Target Beauty Facility (SFT) which uses a relatively low intensity 20 TeV proton beam as a generator of very high momenta B's is an exciting prospect which is very competitive with other B factory ideas. The yields of B's in such a facility are quite high (3 {times} 10{sup 10} {yields} 10{sup 11} B's per year). At this level of statistics, CP violation measurements will be possible in many modes. In addition, the fixed target configuration, because of the high momen… more

EMPACT: Electrons Muons Partons with Air Core Toroids

Description: The EMPACT experiment utilizes a broad approach to maximize its discovery potential for new phenomena accessible at the SSC. The high resolution detector has a balances emphasis on, and large acceptance for, electrons, muons, jets, and noninteracting particles, and is capable of utilizing the ultimate luminosity of the SSC. The detector emphasizes excellent calorimetry augmented by TRD tracking, and employs an innovative system of superconducting air core toroids for muon measurements. Signific… more

Te Inclusions in CZT Detectors: New Method for Correcting Their Adverse Effects

Description: Both Te inclusions and point defects can trap the charge carriers generated by ionizing particles in CdZnTe (CZT) detectors. The amount of charge trapped by point defects is proportional to the carriers’ drift time and can be corrected electronically. In the case of Te inclusions, the charge loss depends upon their random locations with respect to the electron cloud. Consequently, inclusions introduce fluctuations in the charge signals, which cannot be easily corrected. In this paper, we descri… more

FPIX1: An advanced pixel readout chip

Description: At Fermilab, a pixel detector for BTeV is proposed for installation a few millimeters from the beam. Its information will be used in on-line track finding for the lowest level trigger system. This requires a high-speed readout and immediate data transfer from the pixel chip to the trigger processor. It is also believed that a 2-4 bits of analog information is required to achieve the targeted spatial resolution [1] with 50{micro} wide pixels. Our first prototype, FPIX0 [2], is now being used in … more

Total ozone retrieval from satellite multichannel filter radiometer measurements

Description: A total ozone retrieval model has been developed to process radiance data gathered by a satellite-mounted multichannel filter radiometer (MFR). Extensive effort went into theoretical radiative transfer modeling, a retrieval scheme was developed, and the technique was applied to the MFR radiance measurements. The high quality of the total ozone retrieval results was determined through comparisons with Dobson measurements. Included in the report are global total ozone maps for 20 days between May… more

Magnetic field effects on endcap EM calorimetry in SDC

Description: The SDC calorimeter will be immersed in a strong magnetic field in the endcap region because of the solenoid which supplies the SDC tracking field. This flux must be returned through the endcap region of the electromagnetic (EM) and hadronic (HAD) calorimeters. Since magnetic fields are known to induce changes in the light output of plastic scintillator, the endcap will need to be recalibrated once the solenoid is energized. In addition, gradients in the field will create nonuniformities in the… more

Accurate Computer Simulation of a Drift Chamber

Description: A general purpose program for drift chamber studies is described. First the capacitance matrix is calculated using a Green's function technique. The matrix is used in a linear-least-squares fit to choose optimal operating voltages. Next the electric field is computed, and given knowledge of gas parameters and magnetic field environment, a family of electron trajectories is determined. These are finally used to make drift distance vs time curves which may be used directly by a track reconstructi… more

Microprocessor Implementation of a Time Variant Floating Mean Counting Algorithm

Description: Rate estimation of nuclear pulses emitted from nuclear detectors has been well documented in papers written as early as 1965 to as recently as 1990. It is well known that pulses emitted from a nuclear detector can vary with time and an accurate estimate of the count rate must be based on a sifficient number of pulse counts within a sample period as well as the recent history of pulse counts acquired in previous windows to accurately estimate the current rate. This paper will review the attribut… more

Working with arrays of inexpensive EIDE disk drives

Description: In today's marketplace, the cost per Terabyte of disks with EIDE interfaces is about a third that of disks with SCSI. Hence, three times as many particle physics events could be put online with EIDE. The modern EIDE interface includes many of the performance features that appeared earlier in SCSI. EIDE bus speeds approach 33 Megabytes/s and need only be shared between two disks rather than seven disks. The interal I/O rate of very fast (and expensive) SCSI disks is only 50% greater than EIDE di… more
