Analytic model of ion emission from the focus of an intense relativistic electron beam on a target

Description: Advanced radiographic systems for stockpile stewardship require very small x-ray sources to achieve the required resolution. Focusing multi-kiloampere beams to diameters on the order of 1 mm onto a Bremsstrahlung target leads to the generation of axial electric fields on the order of several MV/cm which act to extract ions out of the surface plasma and accelerate them upstream into the beam. These backstreaming ions act as a distributed electrostatic lens which can perturb the focus of the elec… more

Demonstration of the Tank Farm Washing Process and the DWPF SRAT Cycle with Sludge Batch 3 Simulant and Precipitated Pu/Gd Mixture from H-Canyon Tank 18.3

Description: The Nuclear Materials Management Division (NMMD) has proposed that certain Pu solutions stored in H-Canyon be disposed to H-Tank Farm. These solutions contain significant inventories of plutonium. The Pu/Gd mixture (along with the sludge slurry from Tank 7 and Am/Cm solution) will be processed as a part of Sludge Batch 3. Sludge Batch 3 is the next sludge batch of feed for the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). In order to prepare the feed for DWPF, the sludge slurry will be washed to ap… more

Statistical characterization report for Single-Shell Tank 241-T-104

Description: This report contains the results of the statistical analysis of data from two core samples obtained from single-shell tank 241-T-104 (T-104). Section 2.0 contains a description of the core samples and the chemical analyses performed on the core samples. Section 3.0 contains mean concentration estimates and associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) on the mean for each of the analytes found in the core composite samples. Section 4.0 contains estimates of the spatial variability (variability betw… more

Coupled Geochemical and Hydrological Processes Governing the Fate and Transport of Radionuclides and Toxic Metals Beneath the Hanford Tank Farms

Description: This project addresses the goals of the Environmental Management Sciences Program (EMSP) that seeks innovative basic research to benefit cleanup technologies and decision-making strategies for contaminated environments. Our proposal specifically addresses Hanford research needs in subsurface science by contributing to the objectives of the Tank Farm Vadose Characterization Project and the 200 Area Remedial Action Project (http://www.bhi-erc.com/projects/vadose/sandt/stdocs/subneeds.pdf) which a… more

Electrical Contact Performance Degradation in Electromechanical Components

Description: Detailed materials evaluations have been performed for MC2969 Intent Stronglink switch monitor circuit parts returned from the field out of retired weapon systems. Evaluations of local contact resistance, surface chemical composition and surface roughness and wear have been determined as a function of component level contact loop resistance testing position. Several degradation mechanisms have been identified and correlated with the component level measurements. Operational degradation produces… more

FY 1996 solid waste integrated life-cycle forecast characteristics summary. Volumes 1 and 2

Description: For the past six years, a waste volume forecast has been collected annually from onsite and offsite generators that currently ship or are planning to ship solid waste to the Westinghouse Hanford Company`s Central Waste Complex (CWC). This document provides a description of the physical waste forms, hazardous waste constituents, and radionuclides of the waste expected to be shipped to the CWC from 1996 through the remaining life cycle of the Hanford Site (assumed to extend to 2070). In previous … more

Westinghouse Hanford Company special nuclear material vault storage study

Description: Category 1 and 2 Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) require storage in vault or vault type rooms as specified in DOE orders 5633.3A and 6430.1A. All category 1 and 2 SNM in dry storage on the Hanford site that is managed by Westinghouse Hanford Co (WHC) is located in the 200 West Area at Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) facilities. This document provides current and projected SNM vault inventories in terms of storage space filled and forecasts available space for possible future storage needs.

Acceptable Knowledge Document for INEEL Stored Transuranic Waste -- Rocky Flats Plant Waste. Revision 2

Description: This document and supporting documentation provide a consistent, defensible, and auditable record of acceptable knowledge for waste generated at the Rocky Flats Plant which is currently in the accessible storage inventory at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. The inventory consists of transuranic (TRU) waste generated from 1972 through 1989. Regulations authorize waste generators and treatment, storage, and disposal facilities to use acceptable knowledge in appropriate… more
