NOVA integrated alignment/diagnostic sensors

Description: Under Contract 3772003 to the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Aerojet ElectroSystems Company has investigated a number of alignment system design topics for the NOVA and SHIVA upgrade lasers. Prior reports dealt with the Main Beam Alignment System, and with Multipass Amplifier Alignment Concepts. Extension of the method of the small angle approximation: open detector

Description: We use the radiative transfer equation to study the multiple scattering undergone by a laser beam propagating through a turbid medium. During the propagation, we view the beam as first scattering into a narrow forward cone, and then into a diffuse pattern. Improved performance of the ATA injector

Description: During the last year we re-configured the ATA injector to accommodate field emission cathodes. The injector is now run as a diode machine with a 7 cm radius cathode, an A-K gap of 12.9 cm and a field stress of 190 kV/cm. The advantage of using field emission cathodes is we have increased the injector brightness by a factor of ten above the level we were able to reach using the low density plasma cathodes.

Significant Lifetime and Background Improvements in PEP-II by Reducing the 3rd Order Chromaticity in LER with Orbit Bumps

Description: Orbit bumps in sextupoles are routinely used for tuning the luminosity in the PEP-II B-Factory. Anti-symmetric bumps at a pair of identical sextupoles separated by -I section generate the net dispersion, while symmetric horizontal bumps induce a tune shift and beta beat. By combining two of these symmetric bumps with opposite signs, where the second pair is 90{sup o} away, the tune shift cancels and the beta beat doubles. A System for Measuring Defect Induced Beam Modulation on Inertial Confinement Fusion-class Laser Optics

Description: A multi-wavelength laser based system has been constructed to measure defect induced beam modulation (diffraction) from ICF class laser optics. The Nd:YLF-based modulation measurement system (MMS) uses simple beam collimation and imaging to capture diffraction patterns from optical defects onto an 8-bit digital camera at 1053, 527 and 351 nm. Experiments on ETA comparing wire-conditioned and non-wire-conditioned beam propagation

Description: This report describes experiments in beam propagation with the ETA beam during 1982 following accelerator cavity modifications which allowed a maximum beam current of up to 8 kA at the entrance to the propagation tank. Hysteresis of sextupole and ac loss in Energy Doubler dipole magnets

Description: A simple model gave utilized for calculation of magnetization effects on ac loss and sextupole for Energy Doubler dipole magnets. The calculation in the simple model gave an underestimation of ac loss by about 30%. Results of computation on ac harmonics were also described.

Snakes and spin rotators

Description: The generalized snake configuration offers advantages of either shorter total snake length and smaller orbit displacement in the compact configuration or the multi-functions in the split configuration. We found that the compact configuration can save about 10% of the total length of a snake. HELIA - high energy linear induction accelerators

Description: A novel approach to providing high voltage (>10 MV), high current (>200 kA), short duration (20-40 ns), particle beam pulses is described. The approach uses 1 MV Metglas isolated cavities driven by water pulse lines. These are stacked in series by using a magnetically insulated cathode stalk. Radiation-to-light converters for nuclear environments: deep red emitters

Description: This report gives the preliminary results on work done to find a scintillator that is compatible with high-bandwidth, long-distance fiber-optic transmission. Polarization and phase effects in coatings

Description: Thin film interference coatings are a commonplace addition to surfaces polished in a modern optical fabrication facility. These coatings can have a dramatic effect on the optical performance of the optical component to which they are applied. Coupling correction using closed orbit measurements

Description: The authors describe a coupling correction scheme they have developed and used to successfully reduce the vertical emittance of the NSLS X-Ray ring by a factor of 6 to below 2 A. This gives a vertical to horizontal emittance ratio of less than 0.2%. They find the strengths of 17 skew quadrupoles to simultaneously minimize the vertical dispersion and the coupling. Thermally induced dephasing in periodically poled KTiOPO4 nonlinear crystals
