Hydrogenation of CO and CO/sub 2/ on clean rhodium and iron foils. Correlations of reactivities and surface compositions

Description: An experimental arrangement consisting of an ultrahigh vacuum bell jar equipped with an internal sample isolation cell was used to investigate the hydrogenation of CO over Fe and Rh surfaces. This apparatus permitted both UHV surface characterization (Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction) and high pressure (1-20 atm) catalytic reactions to be carried out. Small surface area (approximately 1 cm/sup 2/) metal samples, both single crystals and polycrystalline foils, were us… more

Steam gasification of carbon: Catalyst properties

Description: This research uses several techniques to measure the concentration of catalyst sites and determine their stoichiometry for the catalyzed gasification of carbon. Both alkali and alkaline earth oxides are effective catalysts for accelerating the gasification rate of coal chars, but only a fraction of the catalyst appears to be in a form that is effective for gasification, and the composition of that catalyst is not established. Transient techniques, with {sup 13}C labeling, are being used to stud… more

Effect of pretreating of host oil on coprocessing. Quarterly progress report, April 1, 1993--June 30, 1993

Description: The principal objective of this research is to gain information on the role that host petroleum-derived oils (1000 F+), as well as that of catalytically treated host oils, play when used as liquefaction solvents in coprocessing with coal. The host oil will be extensively characterized and then pretreated in a number of ways which involve catalytic reactions such as hydrogenation, hydrocracking, and isomerization. The pretreated oils will then be characterized by elemental analysis, catalytic de… more

Molecular dynamics simulations of the effects of salts on the aggregation properties of benzene in water.

Description: The specific aims of the project were: to provide an atomic level description of the interactions between benzene, water and ions in solutions. To determine the degree of association between two benzene molecules in aqueous and salt solutions. To investigate the structure and dynamics of the interface between benzene and water or salt solution.

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Fourteenth quarterly report, September 21, 1978-December 20, 1978

Description: Quantitative measurement of the reactivities of methyl-substituted dibenzothiophenes, under high pressure reaction conditions (102 atm, 300/sup 0/C) representative of industrial practice, has been accomplished. The catalyst was sulfided commercial Co-Mo/..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Methyl groups in the 2 and 8 or 3 and 7 positions show little effect. Methyl groups in the 4 position, however, reduced the reactivity by an order of magnitude and methyl groups in the 4 and 6 positions reduced it so… more

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Thirteenth quarterly report, June 21-September 20, 1978

Description: Studies of competing hydroprocessing reactions catalyzed by Ni-Mo/..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and involving quinoline, indole, dibenzothiophene, and naphthalene in n-hexadecane show that marked interactions exist. The naphthalene hydrogenation rate is markedly reduced by the presence of quinoline; whereas the reactivity of quinoline is virtually unchanged by the presence of naphthalene. Similarly the rate of hydrodenitrogenation of indole, a non-basic nitrogen-containing compounds is strongly r… more

Development of vanadium-phosphate catalysts for methanol production by selective oxidation of methane. Quarterly technical progress report 11, October--December 1995

Description: Activities during this report period focused on testing of additional modified and promoted catalysts and characterization of these materials. Methanol oxidation studies were performed as a method of acid site characterization. Improvements to the product gas analysis system continued to be developed. These results are reported. Specific accomplishments include: (1) Obtaining and interpreting infrared spectra of modified catalysts prepared to enhance surface acidity. (2) Testing of these cataly… more
