Sonic Determination of Elastics Constants in Graphite

Description: The operation of a Magnatest Type FM-500 Elastomat instrument, the detection and recognition of the resonant frequencies of a sample, the methods and formulas for the calculation of the elastic moduli from the resonant frequencies, and results obtained from testing several different materials and sample shapes are discussed. The accuracy and reproducibility of the sonic modulus method for graphite was found to be very good. The fundamental flexural resonance was reproducible to within 0.2%, wit… more

INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS BETWEEN LITHIUM AND LEAD. V. BRILLOUIN POLYHEDRA OF THE VARIOUS PHASES

Description: Brillouin polyhedra for the intermetallic compounds of lithium and lead were determined using the zone theory. From these determinations, predictions and explanations of some electromagmetic and structural properties of the intermetallic compounds were made. (For Part IV see UCRL-4973.) (C.J.G.)

High-Precision Determinations by Means of High-Absorbancy Spectro- Photometric Method. Application to the Determination of Cobalt in Aluminum

Description: High-absorbancy spectrophotometry was applied to the precise determination of about 0.15% cobalt in aluminum by the 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2- naphthol method. The absorbancies of sample aliquots were measured versus a standard containing 50 mu g of cobalt. The relative concentration error for a single measurement, assuming a 1% transmittancy error, is 0.93% and the coefficient of variation of 5 cobalt determinations is 0.5%. (auth)

SYNTHESIS AND FABRICATION OF REFRACTORY URANIUM COMPOUNDS. Monthly Progress Report No. 11, November 1-November 30, 1960

Description: Batches of UC were synthesized for use in fabrication of specimens for physical property determinations. This synthesis was carried out with mixed loose powders in a graphite crucible. Two and one-half pound batches of UN were synthesized using a stainless steel boat and an Inconel muffle furnace. Three batches of U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ were synthesized with particular emphasis on controlling the rate of the reaction by limiting the maximum temperature to 1500 deg C. In addition, determinations were… more

Performance and Energy-Transfer Measurements on Cylindrical Cesium Thermionic Converters

Description: Detailed measurements of performance and energy transfer were made on two highly instrumented cylindrical cesium thermionic converters with electrically heated tungsten emitters. The first converter, OC-4, which had a niobium collector, operated with an initial electrical output of 6.9 watts/cm/sup 2/. This output gradually degraded to a value of 4.6 watts/cm/sup 2/ after 1351 hr. These power values were measured at the electrodes for an average emitter temperature of 1 750 deg C, Converter OC-… more
