Description: A discussion is presented concerning the preliminary design and hazards evaluation of a H-cooled in-pile experimental loop for operation in the large double-walled through-tube in the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR) at Oak Ridge. High-efficiency photoionization detector

Description: A high efficiency photoionization detector using tetraaminoethylenes in a gaseous state having a low ionization potential and a relative photoionization cross section which closely matches the emission spectrum of xenon gas. Imaging proportional counters are also disclosed using the novel photoionization detector of the invention. The Effects of a Small Jet of Air Exhausting From the Nose of a Body of Revolution in Supersonic Flow

Description: Report presenting the results of an investigation to determine the effects of a small jet of air exhausting from the nose of an elliptical body of revolution upon boundary-layer transition and the viscous, pressure, and total drag of the forebody at three body stations at Mach number 1.62. A Finite-Difference Numerical Method for Onsager's Pancake Approximation for Fluid Flow in a Gas Centrifuge

Description: Gas centrifuges exhibit very complex flows. Within the centrifuge there is a rarefied region, a transition region, and a region with an extreme density gradient. The flow moves at hypersonic speeds and shock waves are present. However, the flow is subsonic in the axisymmetric plane. Study of nonlinear waves described by the cubic Schroedinger equation

Description: The cubic Schroedinger equation (CSE) is ubiquitous as a model equation for the long-time evolution of finite-amplitude near-monochromatic dispersive waves. It incorporates the effects of the radiation field pressure on the constitutive properties of the supporting medium in a self-consistent manner. Design and construction of the vacuum vessel for the tandem Mirror Fusion Test Facility

Description: We have designed the MFTF-B vacuum vessel both to maintain the required vacuum environment and to structurally support the 42 superconducting magnets plus auxiliary internal and external equipment. The design calculations were greatly aided by computer models, which also speeded our redesign effort when the machine configuration was changed to the Axicelll MFTF-B this past year. Our field construction and erection effort should meet the July 1984 completion date for the vacuum vessel.

Adiabatic compression and radiative compression of magnetic fields

Description: Flux is conserved during mechanical compression of magnetic fields for both nonrelativistic and relativistic compressors. However, the relativistic compressor generates radiation, which can carry up to twice the energy content of the magnetic field compressed adiabatically. The radiation may be either confined or allowed to escape.

Correlation of ultrasonic velocity and rock strength

Description: Ultimate strength and shear wave velocity of dry, 50% saturated, and saturated Paintbrush tuff samples from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are measured as a function of pressure up to 400 MPa. Magnetic stochasticity in gyrokinetic simulations of plasma microturbulence

Description: Analysis of the magnetic field structure from electromagnetic simulations of tokamak ion temperature gradient turbulence demonstrates that the magnetic field can be stochastic even at very low plasma pressure. The degree of magnetic stochasticity is quantified by evaluating the magnetic diffusion coefficient. We find that the magnetic stochasticity fails to produce a dramatic increase in the electron heat conductivity because the magnetic diffusion coefficient remains small.

Electron clearing for the ISA proton beam

Description: The circulating protons in the ISABELLE intersecting storage ring accelerator will collide with the residual gas in the vacuum chamber. The electrons produced will tend to be captured by the potential well of the beam itself and result in a neutralization of the space charge of the beam.
