Heterodyne phase shift diagnostic for measuring atomic vapor density

Description: We describe a technique for atomic density measurements. We generate and recombine frequency shifted laser beams producing beat signals on reference and signal detectors. Opacity in the signal detector leg is proportional to the phase difference between detector signals. 4 refs., 2 figs.

A 3-D adaptive mesh refinement algorithm for multimaterial gas dynamics

Description: Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) in conjunction with high order upwind finite difference methods has been used effectively on a variety of problems. In this paper we discuss an implementation of an AMR finite difference method that solves the equations of gas dynamics with two material species in three dimensions. An equation for the evolution of volume fractions augments the gas dynamics system. The material interface is preserved and tracked from the volume fractions using a piecewise linear re… more

No pain-no gain: The complex art of soft x-ray laser target design and analysis

Description: We review our methodologies in the design and analysis of soft x-ray laser experiments. We convolve large-scale 2-D hydro code output with detailed atomic data bases in a kinetics code with 1-D or 2-D line transfer. The time and space dependent level population data is then post processed further with a beam transport code, including refraction, to predict actual experimental results. While mysteries do remain, we present many examples that show how this complex modeling procedure is crucial in… more

Response of California temperature to regional anthropogenic aerosol changes

Description: In this paper, we compare constructed records of concentrations of black carbon (BC)--an indicator of anthropogenic aerosols--with observed surface temperature trends in California. Annual average BC concentrations in major air basins in California significantly decreased after about 1990, coincident with an observed statewide surface temperature increase. Seasonal aerosol concentration trends are consistent with observed seasonal temperature trends. These data suggest that the reduction in ant… more

Ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy: a new tool for surface science and nanotechnology

Description: Progress in science often follows or parallels the development of new techniques. The optical microscope helped convert medicine and biology from a speculative activity in old times to today's sophisticated scientific disciplines. The telescope changed the study and interpretation of heavens from mythology to science. X-ray diffraction enabled the flourishing of solid state physics and materials science. The technique object of this review, Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy or APPES f… more

MARKAL-MACRO: An overview

Description: MARKAL-MACRO is an experiment in model linkage. This new tool is intended as an improvement over existing methods for energy policy assessment. It is designed specifically for estimating the costs and analyzing alternative technologies and policies proposed for reducing environmental risks such as global climate change or regional air pollution. The greenhouse gas debate illustrates the usefulness of linked energy-economy models. A central issue is the coupling between economic growth, the leve… more

Some new ideas for Tandem Mirror blankets

Description: The Tandem Mirror Reactor, with its cylindrical central cell, has led to numerous blanket designs taking advantage of the simple geometry. Also many new applications for fusion neutrons are now being considered. To the pure fusion electricity producers and hybrids producing fissile fuel, we are adding studies of synthetic fuel producers and fission-suppressed hybrids. The three blanket concepts presented are new ideas and should be considered illustrative of the breadth of Livermore's applicati… more

Agitation within Mk-42 insert caused by air sparge

Description: Dissolution of Rocky Flats Pu alloys and Pu metal using a nested insert'' configuration (One Well Insert (S-3352) inside the Mk-42 Insert) will require a Nuclear Safety Study, a major assumption of which will be that the annular dissolver is well-mixed. The well-mixed'' assumption was theoretically and experimentally supported for alloy dissolution using the Three Well Insert, but the present situation differs significantly. In the former case, the insert was directly exposed to the agitation i… more

Cryopumping hydrogen isotope mixtures in MFTF-B with and without argon adsorbent

Description: Mixtures of hydrogen isotopes, primarily deuterium (D/sub 2/), protium-deuterium (HD), and protium (H/sub 2/) must be pumped by the vacuum system in the Mirror Fusion Test Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In this study, we used argon as an adsorbent for cryopumping these isotopes at 4.2 K and found that deuterium will displace already adsorbed protium. Thus, when we pump mixtures of the two, sufficient argon must be supplied to adsorb both species. We also found that without … more

Preparation of Biliquid Foam Compositions

Description: Technology developed by the late Dr. Felix Sebba of the VPI Chemical Engineering Department by which an oil phase can be broken up into small droplets and encapsulated in a continuous water phase led to research on the possible merits of a fuel prepared by this procedure. The resulting mixture is called a polyaphron. Part 1 of this report describes the testing of polyaphronated gasoline in an automobile engine. Nitrogen oxides (NO{sub x}) emissions, total hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, and exhaust… more

A novel process for methanol synthesis

Description: A bench-scale reactor is being used to conduct studies of the conversion of synthesis gas to methanol (MeOH) in the liquid phase by a novel process. In previous reports, we provided evidence for a two step reaction in series, the carbonylation reaction mainly takng place close and the hydrogenolysis reaction taking place on the surface of the copper chromate. The interaction between the two catalyst enhances the rate of MeOH formation. In the last quarter, we showed that under present operating… more

Thermodynamic States in Explosion Fields

Description: We investigate the thermodynamic states occurring in explosion fields from condensed explosive charges. These states are often modeled with a Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) function. However, the JWL function is not a Fundamental Equation of Thermodynamics, and therefore cannot give a complete specification of such states. We use the Cheetah code of Fried to study the loci of states of the expanded detonation products gases from C-4 charges, and their combustion products air. In the Le Chatelier Plane… more

THE EFFECT OF THE PRESENCE OF OZONE ON THE LOWER FLAMMABILITY LIMIT OF HYDROGEN IN VESSELS CONTAINING SAVANNAH RIVER SITE HIGH LEVEL WASTE

Description: The Enhanced Chemical Cleaning (ECC) process uses ozone to effect the oxidation of metal oxalates produced during the dissolution of sludge in the Savannah River Site (SRS) waste tanks. The ozone reacts with the metal oxalates to form metal oxide and hydroxide precipitants, and the CO{sub 2}, O{sub 2}, H{sub 2}O and any unreacted O{sub 3} gases are discharged into the vapor space. In addition to the non-radioactive metals in the waste, however, the SRS radioactive waste also contains a variety … more

Simulations of the Electron Cloud Build Up and Instabilities for Various ILC Damping Ring Configurations

Description: In the beam pipe of the positron damping ring of the International Linear Collider (ILC), an electron cloud may be first produced by photoelectrons and ionization of residual gases and then increased by the secondary emission process. This paper reports the assessment of electron cloud effects in a number of configuration options for the ILC baseline configuration. Careful estimates were made of the secondary electron yield (sometimes in the literature also referred as secondary emission yield … more
