Ruthenium process chemistry considerations: Redox process

Description: During the first 15 months of operation of the Redox process, it was clearly demonstrated that in the absence of any pre-solvent extraction treatment of the starting metal solution, ruthenium contributed from 75 to 95% of the remaining fission product activity in both the final uranium and plutonium streams, and that three solvent extraction cycles were able consistently to produce, at best, only marginal quality product. Engineering basis for selection of positron source material

Description: This note describes the engineering basis for the selection of the positron source material. It assumes the approximate physics parameters have already been chosen (i.e. a high Z material of 6 radiation lengths thickness). As part of this study a basic heat transfer analysis of the target was performed and is discussed. It is concluded that Ta-10W is the most likely material to meet required physics parameters and not fail structurally.

Minimizing resputtering of Pt-coated microspheres in a batch magnetron sputtering process

Description: Preventing DT loss from glass microspheres being smoothly coated with PT is needed during fabrication of laser fusion targets. Evidence indicates that the increase of substrate temperature due to resputtering will cause DT loss. Sum frequency generation and catalytic reaction studies of the removal of the organic capping agents from Pt nanoparticles by UV-ozone treatment

Description: We report the structure of the organic capping layers of platinum colloid nanoparticles and their removal by UV-ozone exposure. Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFGVS) studies identify the carbon-hydrogen stretching modes on poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and tetradecyl tributylammonium bromide (TTAB)-capped platinum nanoparticles. YY1 modulates taxane response in epithelial ovarian cancer

Description: The results of this study show that a high YY1 gene signature (characterized by coordinate elevated expression of transcription factor YY1 and putative YY1 target genes) within serous epithelial ovarian cancers is associated with enhanced response to taxane-based chemotherapy and improved survival. Manipulation and patterning of the surface hydrogen concentrationon Pd(111) electric fields

Description: Modification of the structure of materials at the nanoscale level is one goal of current nanoscience research. For example, by purposefully modifying the spatial distribution of adsorbates one could control the rate of chemical reactions on a local scale. Electron Beam-induced Light Emission and Transport in GaN Nanowires

Description: We report observations of electron beam-induced light from GaN nanowires grown by chemical vapor deposition. GaN nanowires were modified in-situ with deposited opaque platinum coatings to estimate the extent to which light is channeled to the ends of nanowires. Description: Platinum and platinum/nickel alloy electrocatalysts supported on graphitized (gCNT) or nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (nCNT) are prepared and characterized. Pt deposition onto carbon nanotubes results in Pt 'needle' formations that are 3.5 nm in diameter and {approx}100 nm in length. Physical metallurgy and properties of TiNiSn and PtMnSb

Description: The single crystals of TiNiSn and polycrystalline PtMnSb were grown by the flux and melt cooling method. Their lattice parameters and structures were determined by x-ray diffraction. The effect of impurities on the growth of TiNiSn single crystals was investigated.
