THE FABRICATION AND IRRADIATION TESTING OF DISPERSION-TYPE BeO-UO$sub 2$ CERAMIC FUEL MATERIALS

Description: Considerations affecting the design of dispersion-type ceramic fuel materials are discussed. The results of measurements made to study the effect of fuel loading on the properties of the fuel bodies and the results of irradiation tests of fuel pellets composed of 20 vol% UO/sub 2/ dispersed in BeO are presented. Experience in the fabrication of dispersion-type BeO --UO/sub 2/ ceramic fuel materials is described. From the results obtained, it is believed that BeO --UO/sub 2/ fuel materials of th… more

Americium purification by a combined anion exchange and bidentate organophosphorus solvent extraction process. [Patent application]

Description: Americium is separated from mixtures containing plutonium, other actinides, and other non-lanthamide impurities, by a combined process of anion exchange resin sorption to remove plutonium, and a bidentate organophosphorus solvent extraction of americium of the anion exchange resin effluent. Dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamylmethylenephosphonate is a preferred solvent. The initial mixture may be subjected to a cation exchange operation to remove monovalent impurities. The process is especially effectiv… more

Synergistic capture mechanisms for alkali and sulfur species from combustion

Description: An aerosol reactor system has been designed and constructed for the systematic study of the mechanisms governing the possible synergistic capture of sulfur oxide and alkalis with aluminosilicates and lime (CaO). Actual particle dynamics found in coal combustor systems can be simulated, mass balances can be closed, and the system conditions are well controlled. The collection of hot reactive aerosol flows is performed utilizing an isokinetic probe.

Actinide removal from aqueous solution with activated magnetite

Description: An actinide aqueous waste treatment process using activated magnetite has been developed at Rocky Flats. The use and effectiveness of various magnetites in lowering actinide concentrations in aqueous solution are described. Experiments indicate that magnetite particle size and pretreatment (activation of the magnetite surface with hydroxyl ions greatly influence the effective use of magnetite as an actinide adsorbent. With respect to actinide removal, Ba(OH)/sub 2/-activated magnetite was more … more

Computer simulation of temperature-dependent equilibrium precipitation

Description: The EQ3/EQ6 software package contains two computer codes (EQ3 and EQ6) and data files which form a useful tool in modeling precipitation from geothermal fluids caused by heating or cooling. The data files contain information on 140 aqueous species and nearly 150 minerals, and permit calculations over the temperature interval 0 to 350/sup 0/C. Assumption of homogeneous thermodynamic equilibrium in aqueous solution permits calculation of the driving forces for precipitation as measured by the aff… more

Indirect fluorometric detection techniques on thin layer chromatography and effect of ultrasound on gel electrophoresis

Description: Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is a broadly applicable separation technique. It offers many advantages over high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), such as easily adapted for two-dimensional separation, for whole-column'' detection and for handling multiple samples, etc. However, due to its draggy development of detection techniques comparing with HPLC, TLC has not received the attention it deserves. Therefore, exploring new detection techniques is very important to the development of T… more

Low-density, salt-loaded foams. [RbF]

Description: An experiment was conducted at LLL that required low-density, fine-celled foams uniformly loaded with rubidium. Foams meeting these requirements were produced by impregnating foams made from polyacrylonitrile with rubidium fluoride. Foams with densities from 0.025 to 0.4 g/cm/sup 3/ were prepared and loaded with 0.002 to 0.20 g/cm/sup 3/ of rubidium fluoride.

Roles of additives and surface control in slurry atomization

Description: Airblast atomization of micronized coal water slurry is carried out using twin-fluid jet atomizers of various distributor designs. Drop size and size distribution are measured using the laser diffraction technique. We found that the atomized drop sizes of micronized coal water slurries substantially decrease as the atomizing air pressure exceeds a threshold value. We also found that the atomized drop size, represented by the mass median diameter (MMD) can be described by the wave mechanism-base… more

Description: Determination of ppM concentrations of dibutyl phosphate in aqueous solutions of nitric acid or sodium carbonate is possible after an extraction step with carbon tetrachloride. Ester cleavage of the fatty triglyceride constituents is the principal radiolytic reaction in irradiation of a dolphin-head oil base precision watch oil. Estimation of aerosol plutonium transport by the dust-flux method: a perspective on application of detailed data

Description: Two methods of dust-flux measurements are discussed which have been utilized to estimate aerosol plutonium deposition and resuspension. In previous studies the methods were found to be sufficiently detailed to permit parameterization of dust-flux to the erodibility of the soil, and a seventh-power dependency of dust-flux (or plutonium flux) to wind speed was observed in worst case conditions. The eddy-correlation method is technically more difficult, requires high-speed data acquisition, and re… more

Shaped Burnable Poison Development Program Under the Euratom Program. Quarterly Progress Report, March 1, 1963-June 30, 1963

Description: Poison demand curves were computed for a boiling water reactor with H/ sub 2/O to UO/sub 2/ ratios of 2.1 and 3.0, a uranium235 enrichment of 3.3 wt%, and fuel depletions in the range of 10,000 to 25,000 Mwd/t. These curves indicate poison lumps in the form of cylinders to be desirable. For these same reactors, the excess reactivity was computed for the cold clean, hot clean non- voided, and hot full-power equilibrium conditions. The excess reactivity was computed with and without a black burna… more
