Measurement of Flying Qualities of a Douglas A-26B Airplane (AAF No. 41-39120) 2: Lateral and Directional Stability and Control Characteristics

Description: Report discussing testing of the Douglas A-26B to determine the lateral and directional stability and control characteristics. Information about the control-free lateral and directional oscillations, sideslip due to full aileron deflection, control-fixed and control-free directional stability, effective dihedral, side force due to sideslip, rudder control characteristics, variation of rudder and aileron force with speed, and response to abrupt aileron deflection are described.

Flying Qualities of a High-Speed Bomber With a Dual Pusher Propeller Aft of the Empennage as Estimated From Wind-Tunnel Tests of a 1/8-Scale Powered Model

Description: Report discussing the flying qualities of a high-speed bomber with a dual pusher propeller aft of the empennage. The airplane was found to have satisfactory flying qualities except for stability issues with aft center of gravity, high elevator control forces in landing, insufficient elevator control in take-off, and low rudder-free directional stability.

Knock-Limited Performance of Six Aromatic Amines Blended With a Base Fuel in a Full-Scale Aircraft-Engine Cylinder

Description: Report discussing tests to determine the effect of 2-percent additions of six aromatic amines on the knock-limited performance of 28-R fuel. All of the aromatic amine blends increased the performance and power of the base fuel. Different blends performed better at different fuel-air ratios.

Correlation of the Characteristics of Single-Cylinder and Flight Engines in Tests of High-Performance Fuels in an Air-Cooled Engine 1 - Cooling Characteristics

Description: Variable charge-air flow, cooling-air pressure drop, and fuel-air ration investigations were conducted to determine the cooling characteristics of a full-scale air-cooled single cylinder on a CUE setup. The data are compared with similar data that were available for the same model multicylinder engine tested in flight in a four-engine airplane. The cylinder-head cooling correlations were the same for both the single-cylinder and the flight engine. The cooling correlations for the barrels differ… more
