Laser ion source for low charge heavy ion beams

Description: For heavy ion inertial fusion application, a combination of a laser ion source and direct plasma injection scheme into an RFQ is proposed. The combination might provide more than 100 mA of singly charged heavy ion beam from a single laser shot. A planned feasibility test with moderate current is also discussed.

Sheath Physics and Boundary Conditions for Edge Plasmas

Description: The boundary conditions of mass, momentum, energy, and charge appropriate for fluid formulations of edge plasmas are surveyed. We re-visit the classic problem of 1-dimensional flow, and note that the ''Bohm sheath criterion'' is requirement of connectivity of the interior plasma with the external world, not the result of termination of the plasma by a wall. Progress report on VENUS

Description: The construction of VENUS, a next generation superconducting Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion source designed to operate at 28 GHz, is complete. The cryostat including the superconducting magnet assembly was delivered in September 2001. During acceptance tests, the superconducting magnets produced an axial magnetic field strength of 4T at injection, 3T at extraction, and a radial field strength of 2T at the plasma chamber wall without any quenches. Production of an Accelerated Oxygen-14 Beam

Description: BEARS is an ongoing project to provide a light-ion radioactive-beam capability at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at LBNL. Light radioactive isotopes are produced at a 10 MeV proton medical cyclotron, transported 350 m via a high-speed gas transport capillary, cryogenically separated, and injected into the 88-Inch Cyclotron's ion source. Upgrading the Sns Compressor Ring to 3 Mw.

Description: The initial performance goal for the SNS compressor ring is 1.4 MW with 1.0 GeV linac beam. During the design phase many considerations and provisions have been made to allow progressive increase in power level of the ring, ultimately to 3.0 MW and beyond after years of improvements. Heavy ion cocktail beams at the 88 inch Cyclotron

Description: Cyclotrons in combination with ECR ion sources provide the ability to accelerate ''cocktails'' of ions. A cocktail is a mixture of ions of near-identical mass-to-charge (m/q) ratio. The different ions cannot be separated by the injector mass-analyzing magnet and are tuned out of the ion source together. Hydrogen vibrational population distributions and negative ion generation in tandem high-density hydrogen discharges

Description: The tandem high-density hydrogen negative-ion-source system is optimized to identify the largest possible ion concentrations and extracted ion currents. The optimization includes varying the length of the second chamber, varying neutral gas and electron densities, and varying the ratio of atomic to molecular density.
