EFFECT OF HEATING RATE ON THE THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF PULVERIZED COAL

Description: This semi-annual technical progress report describes work performed under DOE Grant No. DE-FG22-96PC96224 during the period March 24, 1999 to September 23, 1999 which covers the last (sixth) six months of the project. During this reporting period, extraction of devolatilization time-scales and temperature data at these time-scales analyzing the high-speed films taken during the experiments was complete. Also a new thermodynamic model was developed to predict the heat transfer behavior for coal … more

Magnetic properties of Dy in Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}DyCu{sub 3}O{sub 8}.

Description: Superconductivity can be induced at high temperatures in Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}RCu{sub 3}O{sub 8} (R - rare earth) by partially doping Ca{sup 2+} for R{sup 3+}. In order to understand the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity, the magnetic properties of the parent compounds, Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}RCu{sub 3}O{sub 8}, have been studied. The work presented here includes magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on R = Dy and extends our previous studies on R = Ce, Pr, Tb, Ho and E… more

A neutron scattering study of the interplay between structure and magnetism in Ba(Fe1&#8722xCox)2As2

Description: Single crystal neutron diffraction is used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase diagram of the electron doped superconductor Ba(Fe{sub 1-x}Co{sub x}){sub 2}As{sub 2}. Heat capacity and resistivity measurements have demonstrated that Co doping this system splits the combined antiferromagnetic and structural transition present in BaFe{sub 2}As{sub 2} into two distinct transitions. For x=0.025, we find that the upper transition is between the high-temperature tetragonal and low-tempera… more

Experimental and numerical investigation of flow phenomena innonisothermal, variably saturated bentonite/crushed rock mixtures

Description: Mixtures of sodium bentonite and crushed rock are being examined as components of the engineered barrier system in a geologic repository of high-level nuclear waste. Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the thermal and unsaturated hydraulic properties of bentonite/crushed diorite mixtures. Water-retention curves were conventionally obtained from pressure cell and evaporation experiments. In addition, transient data from heating and gas injection experiments on laboratory columns w… more
