PEM Fuel Cell Freeze Durability and Cold Start Project

Description: UTC has taken advantage of the unique water management opportunities inherent in micro-porous bipolar-plates to improve the cold-start performance of its polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC). Diagnostic experiments were used to determine the limiting factors in micro-porous plate PEFC freeze performance and the causes of any performance decay. Alternative cell materials were evaluated for their freeze performance. Freeze-thaw cycling was also performed to determine micro-porous plate PEFC surv… more

A Bremsstrahlung Spectrometer using k-edge and Differential Filters with Image plate dosimeters

Description: A Bremsstrahlung spectrometer using k-edge and differential filtering has been used with Image Plate dosimeters to measure the x-ray fluence from short-pulse laser/target interactions. An electron spectrometer in front of the Bremsstrahlung spectrometer deflects electrons from the x-ray line of sight and simultaneously measures the electron spectrum. The response functions were modeled with the Monte Carlo code Integrated Tiger Series 3.0 and the dosimeters calibrated with radioactive sources. … more

Development of Lower Energy Neutron Spectroscopy for Areal Density Measurement in Implosion Experiment at NIF and Omega

Description: Areal density ({rho}R) is a fundamental parameter that characterizes the performance of an ICF implosion. For high areal densities ({rho}R> 0.1 g/cm{sup 2}), which will be realized in implosion experiments at NIF and LMJ, the target areal density exceeds the stopping range of charged particles and measurements with charged particle spectroscopy will be difficult. In this region, an areal density measurement method using down shifted neutron counting is a promising alternative. The probabilit… more

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Thermally Induced Stresses in the Components of a D0 Ladder in the Silicon Tracker

Description: During the operation of the silicon tracker, the ladders will be in direct thermal contact with a cooling channel. The expected operating temperature of the cooling channel is 0 C, maintained by a cooling fluid whose bulk temperature is below 0 C. The assembly temperature is assumed to be 22 C. Due to the mis-match of material expansion coefficients, thermal stresses will be induced in the epoxy, beryllium, and silicon of the ladders. Calculations are presented here as well as some thermal cycl… more

Capillary liquid evaporation from wick covered plates: theory

Description: Differential equations and associated parameters are derived for heat transfer to a thin liquid-saturated wick, as in the evaporator section of a ''heat pipe.'' Prescribed are a numerical method of solution and a procedure for experimental measurements of heat transfer in the flat plate model. This effort is a part of the Project CLEER program which is currently sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department research account.

Fermilab Failure Analysis of TeV I (TIE) Array Soldier Joints

Description: Failure of TIE array loop assembly solder joints within Stochastic Cooling Tanks during system operation resulted in the loop base plate dropping into the beam region. This caused a non-operational condition to exist within the system. In order to understand the failure mechanism, several loop assemblies were submitted to Midwest Materials and Engineering Consultants for complete metallurgical evaluation and failure analysis. Because of the similarity between the loop assembly material construc… more

New high performance hybrid magnet plates for DNA separation andbio-technology applications

Description: A new class of magnet plates for biological and industrial applications has recently been developed at the D.O.E. Joint Genome Institute and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (JGI/LBNL). These devices utilize hybrid technology that combines linear permanent magnet material and ferromagnetic material to produce significantly higher fields and gradients than currently available commercial magnet plates. These hybrid structures incorporate ferromagnetic poles that can be easily shaped to produ… more

Determination of Rock Mass Modulus Using the Plate Loading Method at Yucca Mountain, Nevada

Description: A suite of plate loading tests has recently been conducted by Sandia National Laboratories at the Exploratory Studies Facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Fielding of these in situ tests as well as other approaches undertaken for the determination of rock mass modulus are described. The various methodologies are evaluated and their data compared. Calculation by existing empirical methods and numerical modeling are compared to each other as well as to field data.

An Approximate Method for Estimating the Incompressible Laminar Boundary-Layer Characteristics on a Flat Plate in Slipping Flow

Description: Memorandum presenting an approximate method for the estimation of the properties of the incompressible laminar boundary layer on a flat plate in the slip-flow region using Karman's momentum method. At equivalent stations, the total thickness and the skin friction of a slipping boundary layer are less than that of the normal boundary layer at the same Reynolds number.

Size-selection initiation model extended to include shape and random factors

Description: The Feit-Rubenchik size-selection damage model has been extended in a number of ways. More realistic thermal deposition profiles have been added. Non-spherical shapes (rods and plates) have been considered, with allowance for their orientation dependence. Random variations have been taken into account. An explicit form for the change of absorptivity with precursor size has been added. A simulation tool called GIDGET has been built to allow adjustment of the many possible parameters in order to … more

Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Waste Package Misload Analysis

Description: The purpose of this calculation is to estimate the probability of misloading a commercial spent nuclear fuel waste package with a fuel assembly(s) that has a reactivity (i.e., enrichment and/or burnup) outside the waste package design. The waste package designs are based on the expected commercial spent nuclear fuel assemblies and previous analyses (Macheret, P. 2001, Section 4.1 and Table 1). For this calculation, a misloaded waste package is defined as a waste package that has a fuel assembly… more

The Next Generation of Photo-Detector for Particle Astrophysics.

Description: We advocate support of research aimed at developing alternatives to the photomultiplier tube for photon detection in large astroparticle experiments such as gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy, and direct dark matter detectors. Specifically, we discuss the development of large area photocathode microchannel plate photomultipliers and silicon photomultipliers. Both technologies have the potential to exhibit improved photon detection efficiency compared to existing glass vacuum photomultiplier tubes. more

Technical investigation of a pyrophoric event involving corrosion products from HEU ZPPR fuel plates

Description: A pyrophoric event recently occurred which involved corrosion products collected from highly-enriched uranium (HEU) fuel plates used in the Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR). This paper summarizes the event and its background, and presents the results of an investigation into its source and mechanism. The investigation focused on characterization of corrosion product samples similar to those involved in the event using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Burning curve TGA tests were performed to… more
