Nuclear magnetic resonance study of metallic scandium chlorides

Description: The /sup 45/Sc nuclear magnetic resonance was studied in samples having the general composition CsSc/sub x/Cl/sub 3/ (0.67 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) in the CsCl-ScCl/sub 3/-Sc system. In particular the structure of CsScCl/sub 3/ suggests that it may be a one-dimensional conductor, and an attempt was therefore made to detect the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition of the type characteristic of one-dimensional conductors. Conventional crossed-coil (nuclear inductioā€¦ more

Theory of ordering transformations in metals and minerals

Description: This dissertation presents an investigation of ordering in FCC based systems using the pair potential approximation in the ground state and mean field limits. The theoretical approach is used to explain the occurrence of observed equilibrium phases and characteristics of thermodynamic instabilities, in particular, spinodal ordering and decomposition. It is shown that the stability of non-integer domain sizes in long period superstructures such as Al{sub 3}Ti and Ag{sub 3}Mg may result from the ā€¦ more

Devil's staircase and order without periodicity in classical condensed matter

Description: The existence of incommensurate structures proves that crystal ordering is not always the most stable one for nonquantum matter. Some properties of structures which are obtained by minimizing a free energy are investigated in the Frenkel Kontorova and related models. It is shown that an incommensurate structure can be either quasi-sinusoidal with a phason mode or built out of a sequence of equidistant defects (discommensurations) which are locked to the lattice by the Peierls force. Initial energy density of quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Description: Recently, there has been considerable interest in the central rapidity region of highly relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Such an interest stems from the possibility of creating hadron matter of high energy density which may exceed the critical energy density for a phase transition between ordinary confined matter and the unconfined quark-gluon plasma. The experimental searches and identification of the quark-gluon plasma may provide a new insight into the question of quark confinement. The esā€¦ more

Description: Use of the tilt-pour melt-caster makes distinct improvements in the cesium encapsulation process. Compared to the vacuum castings system now in use, the tilt-pour equipment requires no reliance on heat-traced transfer lines, less sealing pressure for capsule filling, is less corrosive to capsules and is easier to repair. From the results of the extensive development program, it is concluded that the tilt-pour melt-caster can be operated to meet the cesium encapsulation production and maintenancā€¦ more

Further considerations of critical heat flux in saturated pool boiling during power transients

Description: In this paper, we further evaluate our previously postulated transient CHF model. First, we verify the steady-state CHF model on which the transient model is based by using recent macrolayer-thickness data. We also include the effect of thermal storage in the heater that we previously neglected. The use of a simplified approach in the prediction of the instantaneous surface heat flux for given pwoer generation rates considerably improves the predictive capability of the transient critical heat-ā€¦ more

Elastic constants and the structural phase transition in La sub 2-x Sr sub x CuO sub 4

Description: Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy is used to measure the temperature dependence of all six elastic moduli of La{sub 2-x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4}. A giant softening (> 50% reduction) in the in-plane shear modulus, c{sub 66}, is observed and is attributed to the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition in this material. This phase transition and the corresponding softening is examined with a simple anharmonic mechanical model and a macroscopic Ginsburg-Landau formalism exploiting the full syā€¦ more
