Air flow in a separating laminar boundary layer

Description: Report discussing the speed distribution in a laminar boundary layer on the surface of an elliptic cylinder, of major and minor axes 11.78 and 3.98 inches, respectively, has been determined by means of a hot-wire anemometer. The direction of the impinging air stream was parallel to the major axis. Special attention was given to the region of separation and to the exact location of the point of separation. An approximate method, developed by K. Pohlhausen for computing the speed distribution, the thickness of the layer, and the point of separation, is described in detail; and speed-distribution curves calculated by this method are presented for comparison with experiment.

Electronic Circuits Lectures

Description: The two-electrode vacuum tube, or diode, consists of an electron-emitting cathode surrounded by a positive anode (plate). A plot of plate current (i{sub b}) vs plate voltage (e{sub b}) is shown. At low anode voltages, the anode current is limited by the repelling effect that the negative electrons already in the space have on the electrons just being emitted (space-charge effect). When a full space charge is present, the plate current depends upon the plate voltage according to Childs law: i{sub b} {approx} e{sub b}{sup 3/2}. Increasing the plate voltage eventually results in an electron flow equal to total cathode emission, after which further increases in anode voltage will produce practically no additional current (voltage saturation). However, for high field stresses, additional electrons are pulled out of the cathode (field emission), increasing the current even further.

Flight Tests of Rocket-Powered "Tin-Can" Models of AAF Project MX-800

Description: Flight tests were made of six noninstrumented rocket-powered "Tin Can" models of AAF Project MX-800. Velocity and drag data were obtained by use of CU Doppler radar. The existence of stability and adequate structural strength for flight near zero lift was checked by visual and photographic observation. Drag data obtained during the tests agreed reasonably well with estimates based on experimental data from NACA RM-2 rocket-powered drag research models.

Neutron source progress report

Description: In this report progress is reported on the production of the postum-beryllium neutron sources and the postum-fluoborate neutron sources. A brief discussion is given for each. Results are given of the efficiency of the postum-fluoborate source and its comparison with Std. 9 and Al-1. This source was shipped to Los Alamos on December 16, 1948.

Effect of airfoil section and tip tanks on the aerodynamic characteristics at high subsonic speeds of an unswept wing of aspect ratio 5.16 and taper ratio 0.61

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effect of two wing sections and a tip tank on the aerodynamic characteristics of a rigid unswept wing in the high-speed tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.60 to 0.90. Results regarding the effect of original airfoil sections, effect of modifications to Section B, effect of tip tank, and characteristics of the tip tank in the presence of the wing are provided.
